Hello Dan,

I think it is possible to use a basic Linux installation, but it may be
difficult because of the small available memory.  I believe that most
Linux distributions require about 8 Mb of RAM just for installing, so
you may have to do some kind of manual installation.

Now, after trying to discourage you...  there is a 

"Small Memory mini-HOWTO"

at the Linux Documentation Project home page, 
( http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/ ) that will give
you hints and guidelines about such an installation.

There are also some micro-Linux distributions (fitting
on just one floppy or something like that) that could
address your needs, but I do not have any pointer handy
here.

PS: Some time ago I was thinking of recycling an old 80386SX with
2 Mb of RAM with Linux, but finally resigned, since I could not
spend too much time on this.
