Most notebooks are full of proprietary stuff. I don't think Toshiba
is exceptional in this respect. For HDDs, there seems to be an
industry defacto form factor for 2.5in drives. The length and width
is the same, and the connector location is the same. The only
difference is the height of the drive.
In some laptops, the drive will fit snugly into some ingeniously
designed space. In that case, you are constrained to get a
replacement drive that is the same height or shorter. In other
laptops, there is a little slack, so you might be able to get a taller
replacement drive.
FYI, Toshiba is one of the major manufacturers of 2.5in hard drives.
For what it's worth, I have seen mail order prices for 6.4GB Toshiba
2.5in drives for around US$250.
For a replacement drive, I would get one with equal or less power
requirements than the original. My belief is that heat is pretty much
correlated with power consumption, and the power ratings are easy to
get from manufacturers web sites.
