Hi,
On my IBM Thinkpad 350(486SX/50) I had a 170Mb hdd and I felt quite
claustrophobic whit linux on it, so I decided to bye another hdd. I found
one of 350Mb...my bios is since 1994...I plug the hdd into the laptop and
after two reboots it autodetect the hdd. Also few years ago, I get a 2,1Gb
hdd; when I plug it in, my laptop autodetect it immediatly, but couldn't
use more then 500Mb of it, so I made four partitions of 500Mb and it's
working fine now. I can see all of them.
I advise you to try it out (my bios doesn't have any hdd setup utility)
and you'll see; there's nothing wrong that could happen.

bye.
