        Yes, I started with them in, but took them out in trying
something to make things better or worse.

I got around it incidentally - use wvdial. The only hack is to add your
dial in number, username and password (in plain ascii) to
etc/wvdial.conf. They started it off wvdial.conf with a phone number
999999. THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY GREAT, YOU KNOW! In Ireland, 999 gets the
emergency services  - Police, Ambulance, Fire Brigade - Like 911, or
112. But I'm not in jail yet ;-)
