As a Linux newbie but an Electronic hardware type, I would not
be too worried about the kernel. Laptops are inclined to have a
hardware only charger - it's too important to leave it to something
unpredictable like the computer :-).
I would suggest
1. Dud or reduced capacity battery due to memory effect. Solve by
discharging (e.g.with a bulb) fully, and recharging.
2. Altered charge threshold (i.e. circuit decides it's fully charged
at, say, 13.5Volts instead of 15.5 Volts. This is quite rare.
3. Faulty lead from external Power Supply. Test by stretching the wires
near the ends and releasing. You may notice a dip in the width at one
point. That's your break. DON'T OVERDO THIS! Fix with a soldering iron.
The junction just coming out of the psu, and the plug in the laptop are
the two weak points.
