I believe that there is a group building a verion of linux for embedded
systems that will run with minimal ram... I don't know how far along
they are, but the project is called ELKS
(http://www.uk.linux.org/ELKS-Home/). It may be a solution.

I tryed to install LINUX on an old Laptop (386 / 2MB RAM).
After a short time it stoped with the message
"< 4MB RAM - System halted".
Does anybody know if a small Linux-Version (for 2MB RAM)
exist and where to get from?
To upgrade the RAM is to expensive. It kosts around about
$300.- USD. :-(((
