Hi all,
thanks for the various bits of help. but...no help.
Recapping, the problem is the checksum in the second stage
loader of LILO, all I see when booting is LIL- then
the machine hangs.
It doesn't matter whether I use a make zImage or make
bzImage binary, the loading is not the problem.
reconstructing with lilo -l (linear) then doing a
lilo -q -v (verbose query) I get option strings
that are pure bollocks - control codes, etc. Trying
a normal /sbin/lilo I get no such errors.
My fear that the version of the kernel that I tried to
compile and install is the culprit is enhanced by
the behaviour when I make such a kernel (essentially
the same as my usual but with frame buffer devices
installed) I cannot even boot this kernel from a floppy.
I am making the floppy with
cp arch/i386/boot/zImage (or whatever it's called) /dev/fd0
which usually works.
Any clever ideas? I've been beating my head against this for over
a week now, and basically all I want is that the
frame buffer device works so I can get X working!
cheers to all, and thanks for your help so far
cheers!
