Hi, From: ABRAXAS [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, August 12, 1999 11:16 AM I thinking to buy a Compaq 1245 and install linux on it, what could be the problems with this type of machines? I have a 1670, and can tell you what problems I had. First if the video is the ATI Rage LT Pro prepare to compile in frame buffer support into your kernel or obtain a patched XFree server for it. Look for links here http://www.eecs.umich.edu/%7Esteveh/inspiron/ Next the touchpad on my and other Compaqs acts flakey and an external ps/2 mouse will not fix the problem. A patch can be found at http://www.delanoscientific.com/cpq1675/synaptics-2.2.tar.gz The problem seems to be that there is alot of electrical noise in the ps/2 wiring somewhere. (Mine is even jumpy in windows sometimes). Is it true that the modem can only work with Windows? Yes What about the models that work with Pentium? are there more problems to install Linux on them that the ones with K6? <rant on> Overall, I have not been impressed with Compaqs and am looking forward to moving to another manufacturer. (But I am slightly biased since I know someone whose Compaq would reboot for no apparent reason when running processor intensive apps. He naturally blamed 'doze but it turned out he had a 300MHz chip overclocked to 350! - from the factory. Resetting the clock speed fixed the problem. I know sometimes overclocking won't hurt but this time it did.) <rant off> Sorry for the rant, I hope the rest of the info is useful Tim
