Wouldn't you get the same problem if the mouse was not working?  That wouldn't
necessarily mean the machine was locked up.  Have you tried switching to a
virtual terminal and killing X; or killing X with with crtl-alt-delete?

Are you sure it's not that you get no mouse with ps/2, and this makes X look
like it is locked up?
