Do you mean it still hangs when it comes up? If you can get the system up,
even without pcmcia, you can work on stuff :).
I've found that recent dists don't do pcmcia out of the box. SuSE 6.2 and
Debian run into memory detection problems. Caldera 2.3 installs fine and works
great until I reboot, then it always hangs at the pcmcia services.
I finally reinstalled SuSE 6.0 and updated to 6.2. They have a new pcmcia
package on their site since the one on the dist is broken. Check to see if Red
Hat has something similar.

I've used the 3C574-TXs before. They worked fine.

Check Werner Heuser's Linux Laptop HOWTO. It should be linked off your
favorite HOWTO site. His HOWTO might tell you if you have a real modem or a
winmodem.
Look at his links for the utexas laptop pages as well. You might find someone
else has made a web page about loading linux on your model.
