The MWAVE chip on your 390 (and my thinkpad 600) isn't really a winmodem in
the worst sense of the word - it is a programmable DSP chip, so the
the pentium CPU doesn't have to do all of the signal processing work as I
understand it does some "winmodems" that are simply analog-to-digital
converters with telephone jacks on back.
