Just as a further bit of info:
1) There is an open source driver now available for the ESS Maestro 2/2E sound
chip. It's currently in a psuedo-beta state but seems work all right on a
number of laptops including the Asus 7400. The tar-ball is available at
http://people.redhat.com/zab/maestro/
2) The XFree86 Mach64 - 3.3.5 server works correctly now with the ATI Rage Pro
Lt chip, so long as you boot using a text console. This is suppose to be much
faster than the XFBDev server and I have no problems at 1024x768x24. However,
(there is always a but...) it doesn't seem to detect the LCD interface correctly
when booting with a frame buffer console so you have to drop back to the XFBDev
server. Anyone figure this out yet? So your choice is a fast X display and a
standard console or a high-res console (with a pretty boot-up penguin) and a
slow X display.
