This is generally a notebook specific issue, although sometimes it is
related to the Y-cable. The notebook must be designed to support the use of
a Y-cable, or simultaneous use of both a PS/2 mouse and PS/2 keyboard. If I
recall correctly, there is just one of the PS/2 pins that must be wired to
share both keyboard and mouse signals. The notebook company I used to work
for designed all their notebooks to support the Y-cable from about 1997 on.
The company I work for now has notebooks that support the Y-cable going back
as far as 1997 as well. I have used many notebooks for many hours in the
PS/2 Y-cable mode with success. The cables I used have all been
manufactured by CableLink, however I believe they only sell to bulk
distributors such as computer supercenters and OEM's.

Hope this helps.

I have experienced the same problem on my Gateway 9150se. Actually, the
keyboard or the mouse will work, but not both (depends on which device is
plugged into which cable). I came to the conclusion that either the port was
not designed for both at the same time, or the devices that I was using were
not designed to be paralleled.

When I read the small print on the back of the packaging for the connecter,
it read "This adaptor allows you to connect two PS2 devices, such as your
mouse and keyboard to the one PS/2 port. Typically used with notebooks where
only one PS2 port is available. Does not allow simultaneous use of the two
devices". Kinda makes you wonder what's the point!
