I can't help you out on the high-end machine :) but for approx. $500 this is what I am
running:

NEC Versa 2650 P150MMX w/ 32MB Ram and a 12.1" screen. It has a touch pad, which I
prefer to the eraser nub. It only has a port for either/or external keyboard or
mouse, not both. It does 800x600 at 16 bit, and has a built-in cdrom and floppy.
Other models of the Versa have a "Versa bay" that swaps one or the other. I paid $600
or so for it, last year, but you might be able to find one cheaper at onsale.com or
the like. The screen isn't as nice as the Compaqs, though, and the Power Management
bombs on user suspend (I can just close the lid an suspend it, though - not a large
sacrifice).
Debian installed without a hitch - running potato now.
No internal winmodem to deal with, either.
My wife has an older Toshiba (p75 or 100) that she like a lot. Smallish screen, but
extremely durable.
Hope this helps.

Hi. I'm looking to purchase a couple of

-External keyboard/mouse hookup

Personal machine:
-up to $500
-Linux & UNIX compatible
-good, programmer-friendly keyboard
-External keyboard/mouse hookup
- >= 12.1"

Thanks.
-Ralph
