A good starting place is the Laptop compatibility page that documents
people's experience trying to port. This is not complete, though, as
not everyone has posted their experiences.

I am guilty of this. I've ported Slackware (3.5 or 3.6) to two different
Toshibas (a TC4700 and an ancient B&W) and both were very easy. My
only difficulty was building a kernel to support the screwy sound on the
TC4700, which I eventually managed.

I know that others also have had good experience with the Toshibas. There
seem to be a lot of reports of problems with the IBM Thinkpads so be ware.
