I am having the same problems with the Neomagic 256AV chipset in a Dell
notebook.
Sorry if this is a straight forward question, but where can I find which
.tgz's I need to get from www.xfree.org so that I can update to 3.3.5?

Sorry if this is a silly question, but what version of XFree86 do you
have, and is it recent enough to support your graphics chip? Try
upgrading to 3.3.5 and if that doesn't work then post the messages
that it prints on startup as they might offer a clue as to what is
wrong.
