How tight are you on memory? Loading up apps could be demanding
more memory resulting in swaping taking place. Use "free" or "top"
before and after to check it out.
You might also compare the "load up" speed after closing a few
apps. See if it loads faster after you've loaded and unloaded other
apps. I would be almost certain it was swap effects if that's true.
Solution... Throw more real memory at it.

I run it on a Compaq Armada 7770 and am quite pleased. I've got
80 Meg of memory, though.
