There is support in the newest kernel (stable 2.2.14), however when I
attempt to use the /dev/dsp device, it tells me no such device (indicating
no sound card present).

My problem is with the docking station/port replicator, not the external
port on the laptop.  The port replicator has an external port on itself
too.  X does not use it.
