I'm having a paranoia attack!

I've just downloaded the 2.2.10 kernel source and patched it up to
2.2.14, then done all the 'make this that and the other' stuff,
resulting in what should be a perfectly good kernel with all the new
bits and bobs since my current 2.2.5 kernel which was installed from a
caldera cdrom.

I've also made a 'small-linux' directory in usr/src/ (with limited
functionality) and used it to make a bootdisk using 'make zdisk'.

Unfortunately, it would be a real pain to me to mess up my install as I
use my laptop constantly and would rather avoid performing another
'slash and burn' on it, as I did when I initially installed linux, so I
would like to be certain that I am on the right tracks before
proceeding.

Can someone confirm for me where I go from here? My linux books and the
Kernel How-to are not providing the detail I need to be happy to
continue.

I think the next thing I do is amend /etc/lilo.conf, run lilo and
reboot, but I am not happy that the lilo.conf entry I have added is
good. Also the 'small-linux' boot disk creation seems to have worked,
but I am not entirely happy without performing some kind of check. Is
this possible? What worries me is that the file list from the floppy
includes an awful lot of files called very strange names mostly made of
question marks, and I wasn't expecting that...!

Replies on or off list would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Justin.
