Well, it could always be the driver, or the chip, or the cable
out the back, but it is probably the timing thats screwing
things up. Some monitors can take a wide range and others want
very specific sets. The first thing to do is make sure this is
the mode actually being used (it's probably a good idea to
remove or comment out any you not using actively). Second, try
a different modeline, there are reams of them that people have
been succesful with in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors".
Finally, third, there is a great little utility called
"xvidtune" that lets you change the video timings in real time.
Pull it up and Xwindows and start playing until you find
something that works.
