One not so pretty solution that has not been suggested is to make a very
small dos partition, boot dos, run loadlin from the autoexec.bat to boot
into linux. My laptop dual boots, and the only way to get all the
hardware configured is to boot into dos first. We've used loadlin during
linux installs when the linux partition is above the 1024 cylinder mark,
and the person didn't want to reconfigure his windows drive. I've also
used the same setup on diskless workstations which could only be
configured to load DOS floppy images. I don't know what the smallest
partition size you can configure is, but it would not have to be more
than 2-3 Meg to work.
It's certainly not an ideal solution, but it may prove to be the lessor
of the possible evils.
