This may be off-the-wall, but I had a temporary X windows not quite
blank screen problem.

Somehow, and I'm not sure how, the BIOS parameter "Enable expanded mode"
for my screen got un-selected. The result was that at boot time, the
"DOS" screen showed half-size type during boot, and only occupied
the middle of my screen. When Win98 came up, however, it was fine. So
I thought this was an annoyance, not a problem.

But later that night I booted my Linux system, and the screen came up
not quite blank, but looking like the liquid in the LCD was in a very
strange, fairly random state. I promptly powered down the system and
figured out what BIOS parameter had caused it, reset it and everything
was fine.

So the possible point here is that you should check if your laptop has
any BIOS parameters concerning the screen display. If you have your
screen in some unusual mode, this might explain the behavior.
