Hi.
I have just tried installing Mandrake 7 on my laptop (I downloaded it from
their web site in an attempt to cure the same problem with 6.5 that I
purchased recently).
The system itself installs fine, but I can't get X to work. During the
setup (and later using Xconfigurator) the "can you see me" test screen works
fine, but when I try to run X for real I get a blank screen a few seconds
after the blue background appears. If I Ctrl-Alt-BS out, linux is still
running (I can type 'reboot' and the system obliges) but I still have a
blank
screen (Alt-F(n) does not help).
System details:
Laptop make/model: Atlas Flyer 4700
Processor: AMD K6/2 @ 380Mhz.
Display Adapter: Silicon Motion Lynx 910, 4Mb video RAM.
Screen: 1024 x 768 LCD Laptop.
System RAM: 64Mb.
System HDD: 6Gb.
I have tried the SMI Lynx X-server, as well as the Frame Buffer SVGA server.
During the install, I selected the SMI Lynx (generic) option (I think this
is the closest to my card), and the laptop display panel 1024x768 option.
For the record, I tried using Slackware 7 UMSDOS version (BigSlack, again
downloaded from their website) and X worked no problem, although both X and
the console would crash if I did a large directory listing.
So far, I have tried 'startx 2 > x.out' on the advice of another list, but
x.out only contained the following three lines:
localhost being added to access control list
kpanel: waiting for windowmanager
kpanel: ok, commencing initialization
Please help me fix this - I need to escape the clutches of Bill Gate$ once
and for all...
Austin Denyer.
