connection problems

I  am using hp 5500 notebook
have tried mandrake 7.0 but it will not recognise pcmcia.

now using caldera 2.2 connects via pcmcia and pings fine but does not find
any webpages or mail. What is missing?
I imagine something in /etc/resolv.conf and have tried messing with.. any
other ideas please
