Are the successful pings to an IP address or a domain name? You should have
atleast one nameserver and your default domain in /et/resolv.conf like:
domain <domain.name>
nameserver <IP address>                                   
Though you probably don't want to hard code these in by hand. Programs like
Kppp have entries in the settup for this and automatically insert them when the
connection is made.
