I've been running a 400 MHz 1800T for 9 months & everything works well
under RH 6.1 except the USB port & the winmodem. Since the latter is a
Lucent, there is probably a beta driver for it somewhere. The only
thing I miss on this machine is an IR port, and the battery life is a bit
short
but becoming less of an issue with widespread powerports on airplanes.
The box is as light as a Dell 5000 and you can leave the battery out if you
are carrying it between AC adapters (I walk to/fro work 5 miles/day so that
helps.) I recommend the $99 port replicator. It adds S-video output (the
1800 has only composite). DVD works fine under Windows but I didn't
move fast enough to get the infamous Linux driver before it was suppressed.
If you wait a month or two, you should be able to get the machine w/ Windows
ME, which will implement Windows disaster recovery better than compaq's
somewhat brain-dead use of DriveImage (which steals space from D:)
The 1800 was trivial to network to my home tower PC, using a cross-over
cable
(no hub.) Works at 100 mbs under both Linux & Win 98 SE.
Compaq support is spotty but ultimately does the job. IMO Dell is
over-rated:
their hardware is generic but they recover by providing better support. The
1800 is a nice machine that has proved reliable to me in heavy day to day
use.
The only problem I have has was with the LS 120 drive, which sometimes
requires
that a 120 MB disk be precisely seated to spin up.
