Robert,
We were using the Xircom 10/100 (CE3B0100BTX) and we had problems as well.
Initially it would work on some networks and not others. We then realized
that it was working with 100M hubs but not 10M hubs.
We did not look into the problem much further then that (I just changed to
a new pc card). Seems like an interesting problem though... because it
would exhibit the same behaviour in Windows.
