HP OmniBook 5500CT sound problem -- Crystal CS423X chipset et-al -- thanks!

Greetings all!

I have a HP OmniBook 5500, an older but nice laptop, and everything I
imagined to get running with RH 6.1, including X and 2 PCMCIA cards (1 --
linksys 10bt ethenet card, 1- 3com combo serial/ether card); I had to make
some adjustments in the I/O probing and IRQ probing done by the isapnp
module.

Now I admit I am not familiar with the "correct" way to configure the
onboard sound subsystems, but I did manage to play with the isapnp utilities
long enough to understand how to tweak things there.

I was hoping to find someone who has already worked out the problems with
the 5500 sound subsystem; I have read 2 good documents but the solutions
provided cause no problems, but no sound.  I suspect a problem with an IRQ
conflict or I/O.
