I've had it for at least six months. NS 4.0*, 4.5*.

Sometimes, it has even caused my X server's memory usage to
grow very large. (Try "ps axmw".)

Shutting down NS will free up some of the swap.

I keep a small cpu+memory+swap+net monitor on the right side of my screen with
this in my ~/.fvwm2rc:

*FvwmButtons(1x4 Frame 0 Swallow(UseOld,NoKill) \
xcpustate 'Exec xcpustate -bg LightBlue -font
-misc-*-medium-r-semicondensed-*-9-*-*-*-*-*-*-*' \

Is it possible to tell the kernel *not* to use ttyS1 (tty01)
at boot time (without recompiling) ?

I am running a generic RedHat 5.1 kernel, and I have just switched
from using a serial mouse to using a Logitech bus mouse. The bus mouse
is on IRQ 3. Everything works fine when I boot Windows,
but when i boot linux, the kernel will not finish booting
if I load the busmouse drivers (boot: linux bmouse=3).
It hangs when it tries to start gpm.

I already removed the symlink /dev/mouse and re-pointed
it to /dev/logibm (which exists).

I think the problem is that the kernel is using COM2 (tty01)
on IRQ3. I don't want to use COM2 at all, I want to shut it off.
Is it possible to do this without recompiling the kernel?
(I don't have the kernel sources on this machine and I'd
like to avoid going the trouble of getting them just to
set up the mouse.)

I tried using "setserial" to adjust the COM2 settings
at boot time, but had no luck. gpm still hung at boot time.

Thanks for any help! :)

psselect can do this. On my RH5.2 system, it is part of the psutils package.

I use the "mpage" postscript printing utility. mpage can do lots
of neat things such as resizing the output, printing multiple pages
on a single page, printing just the selected pages of a postscript
file, or printing just the odd or even pages of a postscript file.

For the last the mpage command-line options would be "-j 1%2" for
the odd pages, and "-j 2%2" for the even pages. mpage is archived
at lots of FTP sites, but it's home site is:
http://www.mesa.nl/pub/mpage

Yes... You would need an NT server modified with NCD's, Tektronics, or
some other Winframe vendor.

These companies offer a "real" multi-user NT Server version which can be
connected to via an X-Client.

I have administrated a Tektronics WinDD server in the past.

Check out these links:

There are others also...

This is the proper forum for asking questions. You can use OS/2 or
Lilo. Linux will work with any multi-choice boot loader.

Hi All,
I installed this files to my Linux Mandrake 5.2 namely:

        - ghostscript-5.10-1.i386.rpm
            - ghostscript-fonts-5.10-2.noarch.rpm

in the hope that I could use the uniprint driver for my
EPSON Stylus 600. Okay, installation done and typed
 # gs --help
one of the lines contain "uniprint". So far that's good.
I then added the ff. lines to my
        /usr/lib/rhs/rhs-printfilters/printerdb

For full details on its use see the file Devices.htm.\n\
To use this driver you must enter the name of the correct\
upp file in the "Extra GS options" box.\n\n\

  Resolution: {720} {720} {plain paper}
EndEntry
=====================================
I let printtool did all the work afterwards. I was able to add
the uniprint driver and tested the printer under printtool.
It prints an ASCII file without an error but when I print an
test postscript file (still under printtool) this is the message on the
printed page:

I tried to do some command lines like gs @stc600ph.upp *.ps
but no joy.
My God! Can anybody tell me what's happening here. Am I missing
something? What other files to play with and I'll give it a try. Before, I
can print a *.ps file -though in black only because I used the Stylus 800
driver during the installation. I really want my printer to work under
Linux. Please I need your help.
So many thanks in advance.

Is it possible to connect a dedicated win95/98 machine to a linux LAN to
act as a server for win95/98 appliocations? The desired configuration
would allow a linux machine running X to display the results of an
application program running on the win95/98 machine.

The whole point, of course, is to be able to run winshit stuff (like
Turbo Tax or the cheap parallel scanner with no linux support) without
having to reboot into windows.

Any hope?

. . . unless you downloaded it with Netscape Navigator. If you did,
Netscape un-gzipped the file, but didn't change the .GZ in the file
name (presumably because of case problems).

You can still untar (tar xvf) and install normally.

Make sure that Caps lock, Num lock, and shift key are not on or being use.
This should stop the
menus from being dead.

you can use slrn (it is debianized) with a subprogram srlnpull you
can feed and download the news...
or better you can install a ligthgweight newserver (I use leafnode)
and then point the newsreader to your local server...
according to myself this is the best solution for a single-user machine
with ppp connection...
all the program are in the debian mirrors
i use slrn with leafnode

In Linux, there are many different "desktops," so there's no way to answer
your question completely without writing a small (or maybe a large) book.
Check the documentation for whatever window manager and/or file manager
you're using.

You can more easily run the program from an xterm prompt. Open an xterm
(I'm assuming you know how to do this with whatever window manager you
have running), then type:

cd {path-to-wp-install-tree}/wpbin
xwp

This should get it running. If you've installed WP in /opt/wp8, the
first line would be "cd /opt/wp8/wpbin". You can put both those lines in
a text file called, say, wp, give it execute permission (via "chmod a+x
wp"), and AS ROOT, move it to a directory on your path (such as
/usr/local/bin), and then you can start wp by just typing "wp" at an
xterm. (Technically, the first line of such a shell script file should
be "#!/bin/sh" [or some other shell's name], but it will usually work
without this.) You can also add the wpbin directory to your PATH in any
of a number of ways and then type "xwp" to start it.

you can use lilo, or you can tell the os2 boot manager to boot lilo.
there's more detailed information on this kind of multiboot setup in the
howto section of the linux documentation project,

this is an appropriate place; however, it's usually considered good form to
look through the existing docs first. the above site is an excellent place
to start. www.redhat.com and www.linux.org also have links to more info.

good luck! =)
