I tried using the network configuration tool as you describe and also
checked the PPP set up with the Red Hat manual. The connection keeps
terminating itself though. Any reasons for this?
Thanks

I am about to take the plung and go for Linux (redhat5.2) this week.
I've been a long time Solaris user so I'm familiar with the 'Unix'
environment. Admitedly, most of my real productivity work is done on
Win98, yes, well, enough said about that *cough* ;-) I have been
reading recently about BeOS 4.0. It's merits seems very admirable.
It's touted at a multi-media OS. However, when I read through the list
of rather primitive, user unfriendly command line twittery available for
it, I wonder, what's so great about it? So, it's multi-threaded, so,
it's real time, so, it's so fast. What use is that without decent
software? There are zero integrated and fully featured (even if you
don't use 80% of those features) software for BeOS. I know of various
'attempts' of integrated or even stand alone WP/SP/DB/Pres apps for
BeOS, but they're way off the mark compared to Win98/NT apps and even
Linux. This is where I get to the point of my posting. After careful
consideration, I came to the conclusion that even weirdness like Acorn's
32bit RISC OS computer systems have MORE and far better software (esp in
terms of business critical productivity tools) on it compared to what's
available for BeOS4.0. And ultimately, at the end of the day, it has to
be said that Linux blows BeOS out of the sky when it comes to software.
I've always maintained that old adage that use whatever is best for the
task at hand. Sometimes it will be Win98, sometimes it will be WinNT,
other times it will be *gasp* an Acorn, and other times it will be
Linux. I've never found an end-all-and-be all OS with absolutely every
conceivable piece of software to meet my needs, however, in the game of
cat 'n mouse, when we are talking real world, full of substance and
useful creative software, I'm sorry, but Linux flattens BeOS in any
arguement. Who would agree or disagree with me, and why? I'm eager to
hear your arguements as a newbie entrant into the Linux world.
Regards,
Kozzey

Which must be the reason they have use for investments from Intel and
IBM, to name a few. And must be the reason they are now relocating
because their 60+ staff needs more room. And it must be the reason
that they have a staff of 6 alone working feaverishly on GNOME
development. And that must be the reason their RPM package manager is
currently the de facto stadard for Linux.
It has large development costs, but it can also profit from a lot of
previous development. But, of course, Microsoft could do so as well
by taking FreeBSD or other BSD code and just putting it in their
software. In fact, some stuff from the TCP networking and others *is*
done that way.
The main reason they don't reuse more freely available code is that
that way they would be way to close to industry standards, and if they
would be doing a standard operating system they would have to compete
with others. And competition would be the death to Windows, as it is
way below par.
> Red Hat doesn't have anywhere near the investment in Linux that
> Microsoft has in Windows.
Much of the investments in Microsoft is in technologies that would
have existed already but that are avoided in order not to allow
competition.

Hello,
The http://icmpinfo.darkelf.net site has been idle for quite a while and I
would like someone to take the place of webmaster to update it.
You should be:
- Non biased, covering at least Unix, Mac and Win
- Sticking to subject, covering new patches, new security features, and
not new tricks to crack you're ennemy's system
- Available, because you need to update the site constantly, every week at
least
Those interested should mail me back..

I see references to MAC64 a lot when talking about ATi cards. When I
look up my ATi cards info in Win98's control panel-->system applet, I am
cold that I have a ATi 3D Rage Pro AGPx2. Am I to assume correctly that
the chipset used in this card is a form or varient of a Mac64 chipset?
And to put this posting into context, I'm posting this due to concerns
about graphics card compatibility with Linux when I install it later
this week; just incase someone thought this was a Win98 posting in a
Linux group *takes cover and hides* ;-) Anyway, better go read up about
FIPS2. Flippin partitions, can't live with em, can't live without em :)

What does this mean, and how can I fix it?

Hmmmm. Yes marginally. I was rather hoping some rather more enlightened soul than
myself ( ie. you ) would encourage me by getting it going no problems. I've been
mucking about with it with a text fax sent from another system. OCR is easy and
accurate
with FaxWorks under OS/2. XOCR OTH produces crap. But at least it produces. Much
better than three weeks ago...:) I'm hoping that the problem is just something
fundamental that I've failed to grasp.

This may work. Note, I did say for a _trouble_free_
installation do the above. Keep in mind XFree86-3.3.3
is linked with the libs from XFree86-libs-3.3.3 and
_not_ the libs from XFree86-libs-3.3.2. This may be
a non-issue, but it may also give you instability if
certain changes have been made to the new libs.
In general, it is not a good idea to mix packages from
different releases.
Also, the original poster is having a hard time
producing his XF86Config file. He _needs_ the
XF86Config/VGA16 3.3.3 to create it, as again the
G200 was _not_ supported in 3.3.2.
