OK, I answered my own question. Start up GIMP, and under the 'Xtns' menu is
'Screen Shot'. Run the screensaver of choice using the above path and it'll
pop up in its own window. You can then grab a shot of the window without
decorations and go from there.

setterm -file $file -dump $tty

where $file is the filename...if omitted it names it screen.dump
$tty is the name of the terminal to print...if omitted it will print the
current terminal

That is what i have found..does anyone know how to bind this to a key so that
it will dump the current terminal? say like a telnet session that is running
in the foreground so that i don't have to switch to a different terminal to
get a printout

I wish all of those people hadnt bought computers in the first place. Ive
always felt that it is a hobby and shouldnt be easy. Thats what makes it
fun. I like to "tweak" and rewrite script files etc. Mess with my registry
and try to make my system run faster and more productively. I have no pity
for people who spent thousands and cant get their machines to run. Ill be
glad when they all go back to their cable TV and get off of the web.
Especially that webtv junk. Thats just criminal. I am sick of seeing all
these ads with www.ripoff.com, come visit us etc. Surf the web. This is why
I have gone to Linux. I wanted something that was versatile and had more of
a learning curve. Im not looking for "easy" Im looking for fun, creatiivity,
and preople who respect computers and know what net etiquette is. This NG is
better than most and I have learned a lot, but Ill be glad when the net
aint so damn popular again.

Hi,

I am setting up a network server in a student home. This server, a linux
redhat with apache, is connected to a firewall to the internet..
I had some problems lately and found out that someone is trieing to hack
his way into my system...
His atack is diferent everytime..
Now my guestion is...

How can i test my system myselve..
I have one computer that is not behind the fire wall so i can hack
myselve in my own system-computer to test the fire wall.
A am lurning a lot but it is not easy, never told it was easy...
For me it is a project to get it running wihout problems, i was
managing ok sofar, until mister hacker came along.

I tried to get some programs. But most of the time hard to get..

Does anyone have some programs or links to programs that test ports,
sniff, maybe test ipspoofing problems, programs running on a port i
forgot about... Just a program that looks for holes...

Does something like that exist?
What do you recomend...
Maybe you can send it to me...

Thanks a lot..

Remko..

By the way is there a way to stop a hacker trieing?

A couple of things can cause that.

1. Are you by chance running the S3V X server? There is a known problem
with that server. Later versions of the SVGA server will run an S3V card
fine, and run fine with SO5. If you have to run the S3V server, there is a
patch on StarDivision's website. Sorry I don't have the URL handy, but
it's not hard to find.

2. SO5 is glibc based. I don't know for sure, but I gather RH 5.1 is
libc5, yes? The necessary libs are included on the SO5 cdrom. There is a
script on the cdrom to install them in a non-destructive way, but it did
not work for me. I think the bash script is corrupted on the cdrom. There
are also instructions on how to install those libs manually. It's pretty
simple. I followed the instructions to the letter and it worked without
problems.

> I've tried the install under the admin account as well as my normal user
> account with and both had the same effect.

Look at /cdrom/english/prod_lnx/README. Get the glibc stuff installed
first and take care of the S3V issue if that's a problem. Then if you have
multiple user accounts on your box, run the setup script as root with the
/net option. Then for each user account that will be using SO5, run setup
again as that user and in their home directory. That should get you
going.

Unfortunately, he's right. Windows is a standard...more accurately, a
sub-standard. Most people are so convinced that computers are difficult,
that they refuse to learn about the computer...and Windows caters to that
mentality.

"s" means setuid or setgid bit is set. Capital S means the
set-id bit is set, but the corresponding execute bit is not set (a
weird combination for files).
For example,
octal mode 2755 is setgid, and shows as "rwxr-sr-x".
octal mode 2644 is setgid but no execute, shows "rw-r-Sr--"

Hello,

I have PPP 2.2 setup on Red Hat 5 and have my modem working.
I can connect to one of my ISPs to the internet using PPP in Linux.
However, I cannot seem to configure PPP to connect to USWest.net.

If anyone has the ISP Uswest.net and can dialup to it in Linux, can you
please send me the chat script and the options you used?

USWest.net, of course, doesn't provide information on setting up a
connection in Linux, unlike my other ISP to which I can connect just fine.

When linux reads the hardware clock and get the year 1900 back it is smart
enough to add 100 years and get 2000. Same thing with good old SCOunix

Gary,

Here's what I use for something very similar that seems to work:

cache_peer proxy.server.com parent 9999 7 no-query

where:
proxy.server.com is the name of my upstream filtering proxy server.
9999 is the port number on which the parent listens.
the no-query part can probably be different.

hope that helps.

I really beg to differ. Amazingly enough - there are those who love Linux,
but also marvel at the wonders produced by finally getting a bunch of smart
programmers and business who know how to write code and give them powerful
tools to create powerful applications to do powerful things. I'm not a
Windows-worshipper nor a Linux-advocate. What I am is one who will actually
sit down and look at the last ten years of the computing industry and see
how far we come - this didn't happen because things magically became
reality. It happened because of standardization - under the Windows
platform - Mac platform - UNIX platform. Programming ten years ago wasn't
about portability - it was about throwing it together and making things
work.

Windows has done something what no operating system has been able to
accomplish thus far. It provides a powerful environment via API's - all
standardized so that programmers can use them, implement them, and produce
programs that beat older - thrown together code in all aspects. It's not
that Windows makes it easy for an idiot to use the computer. It _is_ that
Windows takes the re-inventing of the wheel out of programming. It's called
"maximum efficiency". And, it's being carried out by all types of OSes -
following of course by an obvious excellent example.

Linux is touching base with this - libc is that approach. MacOS has touched
base with this over the years but only until recently provided a
standardized development library for the OS. And so on and so forth.
Windows != IdiotOS. Windows == LearnedOS.

It's not as bad as you people would like it to be - we've grown up far
enough to "hold" such beliefs that the bohemoth OS is the bad OS.

I began with Linux RH 5.0 that came in the back of the book "Learn Linux
in 24 Hours" by Bill Ball, from SAM's Publishing. It ran very nice. I
have installed RH 5.2 for myself and several friends. It, too, runs
very nice. While running RH I saw some info about KDE (an X windows
client) and loaded the beta-4 version onto RH. VERY NICE! It is what
WinXX is supposed to be.
Then, last August, I saw an ad for SuSE 5.3 which would include KDE 1.0
automatically installed. I decided to try it because of that, and
because it also came as a subscription for $34 US.
IMHO, SuSE 5.3 is much easier to operate than RH. YaST is a VERY
powerful tool to add or remove software and to change the system
parameters. I'm looking forward to SuSE 6.0. When it comes I am having
a License burning! I will be reclaiming the 800MB I reserved to dual
boot Win95. I have replaced all the Win95 software that was important
to me (Quicken, SkyMap, Mathcad 7.0 and some others) with Linux based
apps. Reformatting both my HD's and installing ONLY SuSE 6.0 is going
to be a very exiting and happy moment!

Since kids have found the Internet to be a popular hang-out these days,
we're beginning to see a massive over-population of the new-breed maturity
that I've been hearing about. Guys, seriously - if these people start to
grate your nerves, ignore the posts. I'm tired of sifting through
"corrections on grammar" and "requests for politeness".
