Unfortunately, HR types care what you actually know.
They want to see something easily describable, and a
paper certificate from someone else is good enough,
even if it comes from "Ed's Correspondence Scholl of
Technology and Truck Driving."

I don't have the answer for you, but if you are
resistant to the idea of "official" Linux
Certification as being disruptive of the subversive
nature of freed software, I would recommend A+
Certification. It's about as close to a non-platform-
specific certification as exists in the IT field right
now. The VAST majority of the material you will be
tested on will be MS-centric, but what isn't these
days. I, on the other hand, think certtification by
any one of the distribution publishers would be a good
idea. It's not like they are SO different that a
certificate from one won't be applicable to the others.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Regards.

Hello,
I have RedHat 5.2 and I recently installed the GNOME RPM's for version
1.01. When I did the install I could not Upgrade (Update?) the gtk-1.06
version that was installed originally so I installed gtk-1.2 (rpm -i
rather than rpm -U). After the install I tried to exec gnome-session but
I always get the following error: 'undefined symbol:
gdk_imlib_get_cache_info'

Can anyone help me out with this problem?

Thanks,

This sometimes happens in 24-bit color depths. Try switching to 16- or
32-bit color depth and the problem should go away.

I forgot to mention something - Make sure you're doing this from a console TTY, and
not from within X itself. You can switch to a console TTY by pressing CTRL-ALT-F1
to F6. I assumed you would have done this first. My mistake.

Hello,

I think the implications of moving (from NT4 to RH5.2) will depend on
lots of things. And I just want to share our experience with you.

Our application lie on a MSSQL server running on NT4, with a few
Powerbuilder 5 application connected. Soon after the release of Sybase's
unsupported ASE 11, we decided to migrate to RH and ASE 11 for our database
and OS components.

The migration took us about 4 months to complete, including the
planning, implementation and testing.

Apart from Sybase ASE 11 for Linux, another invaluable tool is Samba.
It is so great that the file sharing in NT4 work again in our Linux without
any changes ( from the view of the users ).

The client side, which run Powerbuilder 5 on Windows 95, remain
unchanged (well, we have to replace the native database driver, but again,
users are not aware of this).

We plan to migrate the client side application to Linux as well, but
this may take more time.

Therefore, my advise is, spot out what components you want to change
when migrating from NT4 to RH5.2 ( or whatever distribution ). And then
find out ( ask from advices from others ) what tools are available to
replace your old stuff.

Maybe you can tell more about what your system involve and I am sure
you will get more help from the newsgroup.

    Yours,
    Raymond Li

I had installed WP8 before I upgraded to SuSE 6.0. WP8 continues to
work fine after the upgrade. During the upgrade I chose to keep the
libc5 libraries. Did you?
Oh, I found a font problem yesterday. The flight simulator package,
ACM, which is super, had the docs in an rtf file. When WP8 loaded it in
every page was black. That is a font problem and I will have to load
some additional fonts.

I recall the reason Bill made it so big is that Apple repeatedly
shot themselves in the foot by extracting unreasonable royalties
from developers working on their platform and keeping knowledge
of the Mac OS from the public. You couldn't just buy a Mac and
toy around with it and learn how to program it, you had to go
through the rites and stump up for a developer's kit. Basically,
if Bill made a lot of money from Win 3, it's because the folks at
Apple were as convinced of the superiority of the Mac OS, as you
are. Right or wrong, the computer community washed their hands of
them.

I'm considering forking out $$$$ for Linux certification. I'm considering
the Red Hat program. I would like to work in a Linux based environment.

The thing is, everything I know is self taught, maybe not so good for a

people kind) without having to fork out copious amount of cash. I'm already
getting occasional phone calls from MCSE type wanting help on installation.

Any thoughts, biases, rants sincerely appreciated.

rpm only checks its own database so if rpm didn't install a file,
rpm doesn't know about it. You can tell rpm not to care by
using the --nodeps flag.

I just bought a Sun Sparc IPC with RH5.2 installed (2.0.35 kern).
It seems to work okay, but it's really slow - about 25 % of the speed of
my Intel P-100.
Is this hardware really that slow or is something setup wrong ?

xosview indicates that int 10 (timer) is ALWAYS active.
I seem to get about 110/sec - at least that's how fast the number in
/proc/interrupts seems to be increasing.
If I run top, it eats up ALL the CPU everytime it refreshes. (80% sys).

Do you ever used the command 'locate'? The update-locatedb line makes
the database current with the contents of your hard drive. It's running
once a day at 5:55am. If you never use this command (it's nice), it
hurts nothing to comment it out. If you only want it to update weekly
you could start the line out with '55 5 1' (man 5 crontab). This program
is probably the main culprit of hard drive intensive activity (takes a
few minutes). The other entries are just utility programs to run other
programs that are scheduled so you may as well leave them uncommented
for now and see how things go. However, commenting out everything
shouldn't harm anything.

To you all who wrote me:

Bob's hint worked. I simply added that line to /etc/conf.modules, restarted the
daemon and my printer started printing immediately.

To Bob:

Thank you for helping.

For mirroring or offline-reading purposes ? Search for wget. It has a
good recursive download feature. MSB

I had this problem as well. There was another version
of imlib lurking in my /usr/local/lib directory. Once
I got rid of it I could happily crash gmc and gnome-
        help-browser repeatedly.

This is the kind of version 1.0 release that could drive
an LGPL zealot to use KDE... almost...

Hi,

Fortunately no Win-98 servers exists.... that would REALLY be a
nightmare!!!

MGR: very character-oriented, brain-damaged licence, not popular
NeWS: X's main competition, better (DPS-based), didn't win because it
      was proprietary
Berlin: coming in a couple of years
Y: coming some day

Hm. Doesn't look too good. Any other alternatives off the top of your
heads?
