However, it's not true with older versions of GNU tar that have been
patched with a (quite popular) patch by (I believe) the author of bzip2.
It adds an option to tar, "y", which does the same as the "I" you
mentioned.

Hello,
I've been struggling with getting my laptop (RH5.2) on the network at my
work. I have access to the Internet through the network (no dial-in).
I've been using netcfg to set up gateway, routing and IP info and think it
might be correct, but I'm not sure because I can't get
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network to accept the 'start' command. My RH manual says
to restart the network connection for the new settings to take place. I
think the usage is /network [start, stop, restart, reload, status, probe]
and several of them work for me... (stop, status and probe) Whenever I
type /network start (or restart) I get the output 'SIOCADDRT: Invalid
argument'. I've even tried going to the /etc/rc.d/init.d directory and
typing './network start', but get the same output.
Any ideas??

Thanks,
Craig Shields

linux provides libdb with a standard installation this can be used to access

if you install libdb-devel package this will provide you with some standard
functions for opening dbf files in C.

I have a general question about memory management - I can't figure out
what is using 80% of my memory when nothing is running (aside from X
and wmaker). I have 64 Mb RAM. When I logon, X and wmaker use about
21K. After I run a few applications (netscape, gimp, etc.), even after
I've quit the applications, the free memory does not return to where is
started. I use "top" to show what's running. I've added up the column
for %mem used - it comes to about 40%, but 80% of the memory is consider
"used".

What gives? It doens't go into swap when I start new applications, so
should I just pay no attention to it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The setup of the UPS software should have you modifying the last shutdown
script so that if it is shutting down because of signal from the UPS,
then the last thing the script does is tell the UPS to turn off its
power output. Then when main power returns, the computer will boot
normally. (Though you might want to change your LILO so that it won't
get past the LILO prompt until you tell it to go on. This avoids having
power ups and downs draining your battery so much that it peters out
while booting the OS, before the UPS SW is activated.)

I don't know if that UPS is smart or dumb or supports power-off.
You might need to investigate different UPS SW or different UPS.

I have to be a superuser to change the ownership of /dev/ttyp? with

I wish somebody builds the ddd rpm for Alpha/Linux.
ddd on Intel/Linux does not have such a problem.

Possibly because in your current bash shell, ./python is
hashed (in bash, do $ help hash). To un-hash, do ($ hash -r).

On 2nd tought: you have a path in ./python, so no, it is not
supposed to be hashed, the way I understand 'hash' feature of bash.

Anyway, perhaps it can help?

Hi,

I just installed Red Hat release 5.2 and have had some trouble with PPP.

I started X then went into linuxconf and added my login, password, phone number and
under DNS I set the
proper DNS.

I 'activate' the connection and it dials in and seems to connect but cannot telnet,
surf, or anything.

Another major annoyance is the modem just dials and dials, even when I don't want to
connect. Also, when
I get a busy signal it does not timeout very fast at all. I think the timeout is set
for 5 seconds, but
that must not include busy signals.

Any advice on how to get PPP to work and get my modem under control are welcome.

Also, while I am talking about problems, when you hit X to close windows it does not
always work -- and
you need to actually file --> close to close something. I'd like to work on that
problem as well. Thanks.

I've started getting this message when I shutdown the system. When
going through the shutdown procedure, I see the message "/usr is busy"
when the filesystems are being unmounted. Then when I come back into
the system, I get "/dev/hdc3 not cleanly unmounted, check forced" and
then fsck runs. No problems are detected/fixed.

Not sure what caused this. I very seldom reboot this system, the last
time would have been late January when I upgraded to kernel 2.2.

Any ideas what might be causing it? How to fix it?

The way CTRL-ALT-PLUS works is that it switches between the resolutions
found in the FIRST display subsection in the file. You'll find that when
the subsection which contains the "Virtual 1024 768" line is first, you get
a virtual display of 1024x768. You'll also find that when the first
subsection is first, and you're in 640x480 mode, that you have a virtual
desktop of 800x600.

AFAIK, you cannot switch between display subsections, because as far as X is
concerned, second and subsequent subsections do not exist.

Solution: Place the display subsection you want (probably the Virtual
1024x768 one) first in your XF86Config file, and either delete or comment
out the other one (just to be sure).

If you want almost unlimited desktop acreage, use a virtual window manager
(ovwm is my choice when I want that sort of thing, but I use owm normally so
I'm used to it) fvwm will do it for you, too.

Probably the best way is to create an entry in the "/etc/hosts.equiv" file
to allow "rcp" from the remote machine. I have an /etc/hosts.equiv file
that allows all of the "r" commands (rcp, rsh, rlogin, ...). The ".rhosts"
file is not secure. I didn't have to change anything else, aside from basic

network setup.

Subject: Help! Debian 2.1 installation won't recognize Initio 9100UW
Date: Tue, 9 Mar 1999 19:25:21 -0800

I am a total newcomer but want to install Debian 2.1, which only offers my
IDE (hda) for initialization, not sda1 and sda2, which are controlled by my
Iwill Side 2935UW SCSI controller, which has the Initio 9100UW chipset and
works fine with Initio drivers. In fact a friend got Debian installation to
actually see and use a SCSI drive with Initio drivers.

Well the friend is off in Europe and here I am eager to start my Linux
experience and I can't even get it to see, much less installed on, my SCSI
hard drive. I think what my friend did was somehow incorporate kernel
2.2.1, which includes Initio support, into the Debian installation routine,
but to me these are hardly more than words. I'm hoping someone will have
the goodness to explain to me how to do what needs to be done to get out of
this dilemma and into Linux.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to give me.

Here's one that was made public a few years ago:

Subject: Re: HELP! D drive disappeared after installed RedHat5.2

Hi,

I know that is not very helpful. But the same is happening to me also.
Having an external Quantum 6.4 GB SCSI-II disk on my notebook, connected by
Adaptec 1460B, where I have drive F: and G:
F: is on the first 2 GB (1st physical partition), G: on the last GB of the
disk (last logical partition of the extended partition), in between I have
Linux partitions.

I partitioned with fdisk of RH 5.1, specifiying the first and last
partition accordingly as FAT32. First everything was okay, my F and G
drives were living well together with all the Linux partitions, sometimes I
boot Linux, sometimes Win95B. On a certain day, with nothing having gone
wrong before, I booted Win95 and what surprise, I get the following message

G: "drive not ready", "invalid drive specification" or something like
that.

So, this seems to be some problem of Win95B, as under Linux the partition
was still visible. I do not know what happened, but apparently the windows
partition info of this drive simply has ceased being. I tried under Linux
to erase the first 512 bytes of the partition (dd ....), in order to force
Windows to look up the partition table instead of reading its preferred 512
bytes on the beginning of the partition. But it didn't work. After all
that, I just formated the partition under Windows. And there was my
partition back, but of course I have lost my data there (fortunately only a
backup partition).

But something disturbing, and that is now nothing with linux, long names
are suddenly not anymore supported. Can anybody tell me why? And why
partition info has got lost without having any problem before?

Kind regards
Thomas
