these are the steps ive taken to get my awe64 working.

compiled kernel with correct options
(ie done what the AWE64 mini howto says)

used isapnp and commented out the right lines in /etc/isapnp.conf

run /sbin/isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf or whatever the command is (it worked)

loaded module

all went well

now i cat /dev/sndstat and what it SHOULD be is

Alternatively, from ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/packages/GCC ;
you want the instructions file "release.egcs-1.0.3" and either

* egcs-1.0.3-libc5.x86.tar.bz2 and bzip2-libc5.gz
or
* egcs-1.0.3-glibc.x86.tar.bz2 and bzip2-glibc.gz

depending on whether you have libc.so.5 or libc.so.6 in your
/lib directory.

In case you don't already have the "bzip2" program:
- gunzip the appropriate bzip2-*.gz file above
- move it to "bzip2" in some appropriate directory (like /usr/local/bin)
- "chmod +x /path/to/bzip2"

Latly when I look at a dos diskette from linux I'm getting some odd looking
stuff in the output. Well, actualy only on the ones that have been in my
A: drive while dos was running since I replaced ms dos 6.2 with caldera's
DrDos 7.02 (from CD). Though I can't say for sure that there wasn't
something else at the bottom of it... But the only disks that this doesn't
happen to were put away BEFORE then. The rest of them have been in and out
of my A: drive so much that I can't determine when this happened...

Shortly after I Noticed the strange output I tested that dos was activly
doing this as follows:

I mounted a blank (dos formatted) disk, and looked at it with ls. It
appeared completely blank. I unmounted and removed the diskette. I then
shutdown. Next I booted dos. Then I replaced the diskette and did a "dir A:=

which also said the disk was empty. I removed it. executed loadlin, and=20
loged back in. But when I replaced and remouted that same disk that had
looked empty before I let dos do the "dir A:" command now looked like this:

This is just a guess: have you tried "rpc.mountd" instead of "mountd"?
I just use both names:

mountd,rpc.mountd: ipnumber[s]

(And don't you need to have an entry for "portmap" or "rpc.portmap" or
both, too?)

That's big area, if it's an NE2000 clone it should work if you have compiled
the kernel to the NE2000 module. I recently installed a cheap NIC ( ~15$ ) ,
a machromate MN-220P. It's plug and pray ISA. When I rebooted linux after
installing it wasn't seen. I then booted from a DOS disk and used the cards
DOS setup utility to change the base address the card was using. After doing
this it was found on the next linux boot and is working fine. So start by
checking for conflicts, both IRQ and memory address, it may have a conflict
with something you already have installed.

Is there an archive for this mailing list anywhere? I am reluctant to
subscribe to it because I don't check mail that often and that list has a very
high volume of messages (I subscribed to it before).

Oh, I didn't know .deb packages were made using ar... I was trying to figure
out how to manually unpack them -- silly me ;-)

But now I found out that it indeed *isn't* bash that's hosed -- it's libc6!!
Something went wrong during an upgrade to glibc2.1 earlier; and dpkg -C says
that libc6 is seriously messed up.

But how would I manually re-install libc6? (since dpkg is basically
non-functional at this point?) What do I do with the symlinks in /lib/, and
so on. I think I can figure out what to do on my own, but I can't risk making
a mistake now so I'm asking.

I switched from SuSE 5.3 to Mandrake 5.3 (which is actually RedHat 5.2
with a bunch of the latest enhancements, and with KDE 1.1), and now I
know that SuSE is far and away the best distribution. Yast does things
for the system which Glint could only dream of. I'll be back with SuSE
before long!

I still havent got 1024x768 at 16 bits on my Emachines 300k. I've only gotten
640x480 at 4 colors or 16 colors and its looks like garbage. I have a 17 inch
Viewsonic E771 monitor (1280x1024 max res...) with an ATI 3D Rage IIc AGP chip
on the motherboard with 4 megs of memory. My monitors specs are:

Horizontal Frequency = 56.40 KHz
Vertical Frequency = 70 Hz
Non Interlaced
Resolution = 1024 x 768 at 16 bits

Dont ask me about the dot clock because I Dont know it and the manual makes no
mention of it. Please help me to properly configure Xserver to handle these
settings so I can proceed with the next step in configuring everything. I've
been stuck on this problem for about 2 weeks. Help me.

From: "Benjamin Sher" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: SoundBlaster 16 PnP Compatible and Linux
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 07:33:33 GMT

Dear friends:

First, my thanks to all who have responded to my request for help with my
sound problem as I am preparing to make the switch to Linux RedHat 5.2
sometimes later this week. I am deeply grateful for your expertise and
generosity.

BOTTOM LINE: My NEC Pentium 166 MMX comes with a SoundBlaster 16 PnP
compatible sound card made by AztechLabs (under the brand name of Sound
III). This has been confirmed for me by AztechLabs and NEC. RedHat Linux
specifically mentions on their Sound Configuration page that SoundBlaster
16 PnP is fully tested and supported by them and will configure
automatically during install.

THE BIG QUESTION: Will a SoundBlaster 16 PnP Compatible work on my system?
In other words, is a SoundBlaster 16 PnP Compatible THE SAME as
SoundBlaster 16 Pnp itself? I ask this because I received a letter or two
implying that this is not necessarily so. I called Cosmos Engineering,
which is selling me RedHat Linux 5.2 on their special Linux on a Disk
program, and asked them if my SoundBlaster Compatible will work on RedHat
5.2. The engineer said that maybe yes, maybe not.

I don't mind buying another sound card, and, of course, I will if
necessary. They are quite cheap. Creative Labs has been suggested. I am
afraid though that I might end up buying the wrong card and just end up
having more problems. I wonder though whether I really need to bother with
a new card, in the first place. Shouldn't a compatible SoundBlaster 16 PnP
work just well as the original SoundBlaster 16 PnP?

Any suggestions?

Thank you all!

Benjamin
