There is no Ministry of Religion here in Germany. An CO$ is allowed to
do what they want if they respect german law. The only thing they did
not get was to be recognized as a church and so they did not get the
tax privileges, a church has. The whole thing is about money not about
free religion or free speech.

I got an Oracle for x86 Linux from an Oracle representant.
But, my Linux box at home does not quite offer the resources
to run it so I haven't tried it (I think it is a 8.0.5 version)
so far.

Hacking as well as virus writing is not my job. I wrote a lot
of assembler routines for 8080, 8085 and Z80 as well as some
for the 8086/88, but today the compute power is more than
sufficient for the thing I deal with, so I can comfortably
rely on compilers.

learn how to use linux but do not want to loose the rest of my hair;-).

Any guidance would be appreciated.

No surprise here, this is linux and the ".exe" extension is for a
windows executable file.
If the file is corrupt then download it again.

Once you removed the password then all you needed to do was give the
command:
"passwd tommy" as root. A user cannot create his password though he may
be allowed to change an existing password. I think once you removed it
only root could create a new one.

The difference is that ttyS is sensitive to the DCD pin whereas
cua is not. Also when one cua device is open all other attemtp
to open that device or the corresponding ttyS is blocked, that is,
you get exclusive access.

I'm not sure what "redundant"means. Anyway, why don't you just
install any distribution?

I suggest you are better to set up TEXT login (NOT X Window)
since you might have problems with your video card.

Just type "startx" after you loggin into to your linux box.
(Don't forget setting up X during installation)

If you have problem with X. Try
www.xfree86.org

and don't forget look around your distribution's web site
if you have problem.

I use RedHat mainly. 6.1 seems does not install all of document
you probaly need. Install HOWTO at least. It will help you a lot.

You think so? I've tried a few different floppies, but they all terminate
at the same point, plus, when this happens, the floppy hasn't been accessed
for a a couple of minutes.
My experience with bad boot disks shows that the kernel won't even load,

I have installed a NIS server (ypserv) on a SuSE Linux 6.3 box and the client
(ypbind) on another one. Works, but has two problems:

On the client, I added the following lines to /etc/passwd:

+::::::
+pb:::::/home/test:/bin/sh
+:*::::::/bin/bash

to give the user pb /bin/sh as shell. But when I login as pb on the console at
the client, it loads the default shell from the server's passwd (/bin/false).
Also /home/test is not set as homedir, but the homedir from the servers passwd
is chosen. The entries in the clients passwd are ignored!

Second problem: When I change the users password as root on the server (passwd
username) and rebuild the maps, the user has still to logon with the old
password. But when I make

ypmatch username passwd.byname

on the client then the (encrypted) new password is shown. Even it doesn't work
at login. Then, after some minutes it works without problems with the new
password... Seems that the map is not synchronized with the client immediately.
Can I force this immediate synchronization?

Thanks in advance,
Peter

Thanks for the advice. I have selected even fewer packages (~240mb) and it's
installed OK. I left /usr set to 290mb. It would be interesting to know what the
relationship is between the reported size of the packages to install and the
*actual* drive space required to install them! I can't believe that the
difference has to be as much as 50mb!

Thanks

You don't need to "take advantage" of the 200Mhz FSB because this clock
is uses only on the processor bus, not for the memory bus, pci, agp, ide
and so on.

No, because as I mentioned before, the memory is clocked with 100Mhz. So
PC133 would only give higher costs but no effect on the speed.

No, they are used exactly the way the have been used in socket 7 or
other 100Mhz boards (remember the 100Mhz clock for the memory bus).

No, the BIOS settings are very similar. Only special options like e.g.
super bypass mode are different.

In the moment there are no SMP boards because the chipset is not ready
yet.

No, it runs with a max of 350 Mhz (Athlon model 2) or 300Mhz (Athlon
Model 1).

This is more a religious question but a technical. I prefere KDE too but
gnome is also a powerful gui.

As I wrote before, this can't be said this way. If you want me to give a
definite answer, I would generalize it this way:
At the same clock speed (and same memory type!), the

athlon is faster compared to PIII
athlon is more or less equal to PIIIe

Of course you can make the PIIIe faster than the Athlon if you use
RAMBUS memory. But the costs are in no relation to the performance gain.

For your needs, the Athlon is in my opinion the best bet because the
small difference in speed (only visible in benchmark results) compared
to the price difference gives you more money for a faster CPU version or
better hardware (especially HD or more ).

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out how to read exactly NN bytes from a SCSI tape.
I use this command to make an archive on the tape:

# BYTES=$(tar zcf - directory/ | tee /dev/nst0 | wc --bytes)

The command "echo $BYTES" will report the size in byte of the archive.
But if I try to read $BYTES bytes from the tape, it will not work:

dd bs=1 count="$BYTES" if=/dev/nst0 of=foo.tar.gz

I'm getting much fewer bytes! For example, I got BYTES=1832960 but dd
extracts only 470 bytes! Obviously, if I try to read foo.tar.gz I'll get
rubbish.

I need to obtain the right number of bytes because I want to pipe the
archive to netcat.

Any ideas?
Thanks,

I have used RH for several years, works fine for me.
Get version 6.x. (or a good book on Linux with a distribution included).
Setting up the system is not that difficult.
When you know someone near you who already has a Linux box, ask
him /her to show you how to do the job.
Do it yourself and let the other person only interrupt when things go
really wrong (like your computer is burning down ;-) . You learn most
by doing things yourself.
Remember that you understand an operating more when you mess things up
(and then find out why things go wrong)...

But when I login in as tommy using the new password, the system says that my password

I agree that this is a crucial piece of info I forgot :(

[grisa@zdrs tmp]$ cat 405311.ps | /var/spool/lpd/lp/filter | lpr
/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: /home/grisa/tmp/general.cfg: No such file or
directory/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: [: asc: unary operator expected
/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: [: printer: unary operator expected
/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: [: printer: unary operator expected
/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: [: ps: unary operator expected
/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: [: ps: unary operator expected
/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: [: printer: unary operator expected
/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: [: printer: unary operator expected

and the printer produces a No way to print this type of input file:
ASCII text

which means that the filter is wrong
yet it was supposed to be a PS printer ?!
