Reply-To: David Guertin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Hello,
I recently upgraded my Red Hat 5.2 system from kernel 2.0.36 to 2.2.3.
I first upgraded the recommended RPM's (modutils, libc, glibc, etc. --
including util-linux), and the upgrade went fine.
Mostly. I normally login with xdm (actually kdm), and that works OK.
But when I switch to a virtual console (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F2), and try to
log in there, I don't get a password prompt. After entering the user
name, I just keep getting the login prompt back again.
Any ideas what's going on here? The login program is part of the
util-linux pacakge. I upgraded from util-linux 2.8 to 2.9, because
apparently this is required for the 2.2 kernel. Is there something
broken about 2.9, or have I missed something else?
Thanks,

Does the Linux version still only offer connection to a server via TCP/IP?
I want to be able to dial-in to a WinFrame server like the Windows version.
One of those few things I still need Winblows.

If what you lost was on a Windows fs partition, why don't you boot to
Windows and use one of the DOS/Win fs recovery programs. You probably only
have to boot to DOS (get out that dusty DOS recovery diskette).

Hi,
I have compiled the kernel 2.2.3 with support for loadable modules.
After I have done that, I installed modutil 2.1.121. Problem is, I still
cannot load my modules at all. I can manually load the module for some
of my file systems. But my printer refuses to work. It isn't even
detected when I probe for one using the printer configuration tool
provided in RedHat 5.2. The README files weren't very useful because
the configuration files it tells me to alter does not exist. Perhaps
there is a typo error somewhere. Help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You probably didn't have complete source file on the hard drive to
recompile a new kernel. If I were you, I would download a new kernel
code, 'tar xfzv' it, and try again. Make sure that if there are any
componets you have selected to be installed as modules, then don't
forget the process 'make modules' and 'make modules_install'.
Good luck.

Ian,
The "All in Wonder" is supported by Xfree86 as are all Mach64 based
chips but only in terms of the 2D acceleration features. The Rage 128
chip has been streamlined performance and is no longer Mach64
compatable. Development is already underway by Xfree86 to have an X11 driver.

They surely aren't. A well designed interface will be easy to use.
Graphics and pointers can't make up for a poorly designed interface. I'd
take a well-designed GUI over a poorly-designed command line anytime,
though I'd prefer a well-designed command line to either, for most
applications.

Can't you? I thought that Pine could be used to read and post news via
NNTP. I'm not certain how to set it up to do so, but I was under the
impression that you could do exactly what you're describing.
Pine is a good example of a non-GUI tool that is designed for ease of use
by new users. It's default configuration disables most of the advanced
features and includes lots of "are you sure?" type messages, but it can be
set up for more sophisticated use too.

For figuring out what is wrong with your partition table, i would
recommend Ranish Partition Manager.
(http://www.ml.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~mranish/part/) With that you will be
able to change any partition type and you can also format fat32
partitions. I found that tool very valuable when I had to fix my disk
after WIN98 fdisk messed up everything.
I would avoid WIN/DOS fdisk if you are partitioning your disk for both
Linux and Windows. I learned the hard way that DOS fdisk gets confused
when you have multiple ext2fs partitions and one FAT partition after
those. Fdisk does see the FAT partition, but if you try to delete that
last FAT partition, fdisk may delete one of your ext2fs partitions.
Good luck,
Juhani

I d/l all the bits for gnome, took quite a while. my impression, gained from

cdrecord supports DAO from version 1.8a18 onwards. There is also CD
burner called Cdrdao, which does nothing but burns audio CDs in DAO
mode.

You can look at the initial menu on the EB95 CD, but thereafter the links
point to directories that linux doesn't recognize. I seem to remember that
you can actually read the files, but it's impossible to do a search or use
the links, which makes the damn thing useless.
I was about to order EB98 until I found out that it REQUIRES IE. One more
level of unacceptability, and I choked. Interesting how the price is
dropping, isn't it? Funny, I used to regard the EB people as not only
reputable but actually respectable, even honored. Crying shame.
