Well, the 'what is the GUI' discussion is crucial to a statment that having
a GUI loaded at all times wastes resources...

To further this discussion, consider have the following 'layers':

   1) Bare system - memory / file / process / network/ system device
        management
                Unix: kernal+system processes
                WinNT: kernal+services

   2) System services - disk server, database server
Unix: more system process, Database server processes
WinNT: kernal, more system services, Database server

   3) Graphical services - handles graphics cards, device-independant
graphics drawing, event handling, basic window mapping...
Unix: X-Windows server and X11 services
WinNT: GDI (part of kernal) and WinNT Graphics Services

   4) User friendly front end - window management, icon management,
        file manager, 'start' menus
Unix: Window manager/Desktop environment (eg KDE/CDE)
                WinNT: Explorer

This could be expanded into further layers, and could be further complicated
by comparisons between MFC and Gtk/Qt/Motif++; Xt/Motif and WinNT's User
Interface Services; X11 and WinNT's Graphics services... but for the puposes
of this dicussion, the above will do.

What is being asserted is that in Unix, you only need the first two layers
to get a working server, while in NT, the GDI is unavoidable loaded, adding
its memory overhead to the amount of memory required for the server, and
it's event loop to the CPU load... This effectively means less memory for
disk caching and other server processes (eg DB server)

As has also been mentioned in another branch (or should that be 'strand') of
this thread, WinNT's GDI is part of the kernal, while the X server in unix
is just another user-level process. Crash the GDI and while NT dies, Unix
will be happily displaying a Login: prompt on the console while still
performing its server role.

Further comments welcome...

The problem is, that NT doesn't have multi-user capabilities (Standard
that is), so you can't start mannaging the system while some-one else is
manageing on the console.
Besides before all those graphics are downloaded you are about 10 minutes
fearther. Andc it isn't true that you can manage the complete system from
the command prompt. In some cases you need to use those freaking GUI's.
Besides with NT4 the GUI is running in ring 0 of the kernel, this is why
the explorer tends to lock-up the server with in-appropriate use.
M$ should have let the GUI on top of the system so that evrone can choose
their own gui or work solely on command prompt. This is what is done with
all "SMART" ssystems Like OS/390, VMS, VM. OS2 and Unix.
If you can't manage the system solely on prompt level than the OS is badly
developed. You can't connect a terminal to NT and control the complete
system from there. You can't just telnet to the NT server and manage the
system that way. Even with those small telnetd that give you access to the
dos-prompt it is impossible to change DNS settings IP addresses, create
users, give rights to files and create share etc etc etc. Though there are
comming more tools for it.

Why don't you take over the X-server. X is multiuser. If you configure it right
you can see evrything happening what someone else does.

It's a problem with (at least one version of) the modutils-2.1.121-3.i386.rpm
Apparently it was built using some weird configuration parameters

track down a newer release (try ftp.redhat.com)

or (what I did)

get a copy of the source - modutils-2.1.121-3.src.rpm, (I got it at
rufus.w3.org), put it in /usr/src/redhat/SRPMS

type rpm --rebuild modutils-2.1.121-3.src.rpm

when it's done you should find a working rpm in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386

Subject: SCSI 2 Tape drive problems...
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Robert Heller)
Date: 16 Mar 1999 09:20:25 -0500

We have this Dell server box running RedHat Linux (5.2, kernel 2.0.36).
It has an Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter and an ARCHIVE Model:
Python 04106-XXX Rev: 715G tape drive.

We are having trouble with the tape drive, both with BRU2000 and with
plain tar. With tar it writes for a while, then the drive seems to go
south -- lights blink and it cannot be rewound or ejected from software.
With BRU, it took nearly 36 *hours* to save 2gig's worth of data, and
then BRU barfed when it tried to do its autoscan/verify (could not read
the archive).

We ejected the first tape manually, ran the cleaning tape, and tried
another *brand* new tape. The first tape was also brand new -- the
first tape ever to be put in the drive.

Does anyone else have this model of tape drive (it is a 12/24gig 4mm
drive)? Does anyone know if this is a software (eg driver compatibility
issue) or hardware (DOA tape drive)? This machine is brand new
(delivered from Dell just before Feb 1st of this year) and is still on
warranty. I want to be sure it is hardware before we call Dell.

What kind of cd-rom is that? some creative labs thing? an old Sony

NT sees everything as a SCSI device, even IDE hard disks...

Could you be more precise about the cd-rom model? Linux supports several old
proprietary drives, maybe yours is one of them.

Thanks for the response. Actually the Seagate is an IDE drive. Dont have any
SCSI in there at the moment.

It could be overheating though. Didn't think of that. I was basically on the
idea that it was spinning down due to powersaving mode. I thought it
couldn't be overheating as it was just doing it all the time.. Even on the
cold days.

I would use Ghost for this kind of job. This program will clone the old HD

partitions in the case the new HD is bigger than the old one. A real jewel!

I have been looking for a ODBC driver for Windows for the Sybase ASE. I

Unfortunatly there are still Windows stations that need to get access to
the data so ODBC is something I really need. Otherwise I can start

This happens when running an executable that was linked against glibc-2.1 on
a system where libc.so.6 comes from glibc-2.0. Fix by recompiling insmod and
depmod.

I had this problem. The solution was to check that the $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
variable contained only valid directories -- mine had crap in it becuase I
share config files with Solaris on my Suns.

Unset $LD_LIBRARY_PATH and try xwp again. If it runs, that's your problem.
