The kernel looks for init in sequence at /etc/init, at /bin/init, and
finally at /sbin/init. It runs the first one it finds. I'm taking
advantage of that to put my own init in front of the real one to do
some pre-initialization. Mine will be at /bin/init and the real one
stays at /sbin/init.

If you don't know how to install a kernel, the HOWTO will work.
However recent information can be found in the Documentation directory

Hmmm... What do you mean by "an ODBC database"?
A database which one can run on Linux and connect to with ODBC
drivers? Drivers located where? On a windows machine? Or on linux?
If your client app is to run on a Win??? machine, then I believe
Postgres has windows ODBC drivers available, I am not sure of MySQL.
If your client app is to run on Linux, the situation is more complex,
despite the "Open" in the name, ODBC seems to be primarily controlled
by Microsoft. Intersolv has a few drivers for UNIX, as another
mentioned, and there is a firm in the UK, which did some work a few
years ago on stand-alone ODBC drivers (one that did not require the DB
vendor's drivers as well) but Ill have to look up the name. Whether
they have drivers for Linux, is a question. And of course these are
not free.
On other scores, If you have a client access license for an Oracle DB,
you could use the Oracle for SCO client. (Or so I am told, I have not
actually tried this.) Also IBM is now offering a beta DB/2 for Linux.
While it is somewhat buggy at the moment, it is also free, although I
am not sure what the status of the beta license will become when the
final version is released. This might be of interest because they
offer a SDK which includes their Call Level Interface, which they
claim is compatible with the ODBC standard.
Anyway, hope this helps.

I read the other posts about the 3c905b problems. I'm dealing with
Slackware and the same card. I've seen the 3c9x.c (I think that's what
the name of the piece of source code is), but I don't really know what
to do with it.
(If I could get this 905b card to work with the win98 machine, I would
use its 3c905 --!b-- card in the linux box. It boots without a single
glitch)
I tried rebuilding the kernel, but got sprayed with so many errors, I
wouldn't even know where to start debugging. So, I'm using the
/sbin/modprobe 3c59x. It just comes back and says that my card doesn't
have support and I should edit rc.modules (which is where I load the
module) or re-compile the kernel...Tried both...nothing doin'.
What it boils down to is....If I get the code for the new driver, 1) How
do I compile it? 2) Is it better to use modules or compile the kernel (I
only have 16 MB RAM in this box, so I'm currently opting for modules)?
3)Is there a URL/site with good directions/troubleshooting helps on
re-compiling the kernel?

I have a project at work in which I need to evaluate several different
hardware platforms.
The items I'm targetting are packet throughput and disk IO performance.
I'm using the netperf tools available from HP
(ftp://ftp.cup.hp.com/dist/networking/benchmarks/netperf)
with reasonable success, so the network benchmarking is basically covered.
I'm having a problem finding cross platform (Solaris and Linux) tools to
measure disk IO. I've been trying to use the IOPerf package but have been
completely unsuccessful when trying to compile it for Solaris and Linux
(various compiler warning, linker errors, etc) and have gotten frustrated
enough that I've given up on that one for the moment.
Has anyone managed to compile IOPERF or do you know of a source package of
disk performance tools that are reasonably portable?

.dvi files are device independent files. This was a format that I believe
the creators of TeX (D.E. Knuth? the guy who wrote The Art of Computer
Programming?) created so they would have a standard target. I've heard that
there are a few dvi printers but most people have to convert .dvi files
to something else, typically postscript, and there is a program, dvips
that does that. Do print the postscript file you need a postscript printer
or you need ghostscript compiled to support whatever kind of printer you
have. This is a separate problem. Assuming your printer setup can print
ps files, you can print by typing:
"dvips X.dvi". Or you could type "dvips X.dvi -o X.ps" to create a
separate ps file. (Maybe you want to look at it with gv or something to
make sure it's what you want before using paper, and gv can do nice things
like print only the odd pages, then print only the even pages after you've
put the paper back in the hamper).
If you need help with postscript, that's a separate problem of course.
If you already know all about postscript, you can ignore the rest of this:
If you don't have a postscript printer, see if you have ghostscript by
typing "gs -h", this will also tell you what printers are supported by the
particular compilation of ghostscript you are using, but the description
is rather cryptic, for example, I have an epson stylus color 600, when I
type "gs -h" the list of supported printers includes stcolor which I think
is mine. Most people use a printer filter to detect if the file they are
trying to print is postscript or not and, if it is, to invoke ghostscript
to do the job for them. My /etc/printcap file says
lp:lp=/dev/lp1:sd=/var/spool1/lpd:sh:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:
The "if=..." part is for "input filter", and my /var/spool/lpd/lp/filter
file (which I got from somebody after posting a question about it on
usenet a few years ago, then modified when I got a new printer) is:
#!/bin/sh
# ps_or_text_filter.sh
# This is a "magic filter" based on one in the Linux Printing-HOWTO.
# Checks the incoming file for Postscript or text and handles accordingly
read first_line
first_two_chars=`expr "$first_line" : '\(..\)'`
if [ "$first_two_chars" = "%!" ] ; then # Looks like PostScript
/usr/local/bin/gs -q -sDEVICE=stcolor -r360x360 -sDithering=fscmyk -sOutputFile=-
stcolor.ps -
else # It's plain text
echo $first_line # the stuff we grabbed before
cat # ... and the rest
echo -ne \\f # ... and a formfeed
fi
# end
Note that this file assumes that any postscript file begins with "%!".
Also note that it is tweaked especially for an epson color stylus 600,
all the sDEVICE=stcolor -r360x360 ...etc crap.
If ghostscript doesn't support your particular printer, you'll have
to look at the source code and see if you can recompile with support, or
maybe download a newer version with support. Ghostscript is a commercial
product, but it's free for non-commercial use. Distributors like redhat
are allowed to release older versions of ghostscript so often the latest
printers are not available in CD-Rom distributions but you can get it off
of websites. Do a websearch for more info. (My own info is a bit out of
date.)
Good luck

the simplest should be to fetch the qt packages from Debian potato
(which are qt1.42). I looked at the dependencies, and they are such
that it should not be any trouble installing the qt packages in potato
on a slink system.
they can be found at any Debian mirror
<your debian mirror>/<path to

<your debian mirror>/<path to

<your debian mirror>/<path to
debian>/dists/potato/non-free/binary-i386/devel/qt-doc_1.42-2.deb
install these packages (if you are not going to compile anything
requiring qt, you'll only need the first one) and the install the KDE
1.1 deb packages.

not really, I just have a ftp server close by which mirrors several linux

There are people working on alternatives. See http://www.pwg.org
And there is "libprint". Find URL and other stuff in

Several GUI libraries have their own print APIs in developement.

What is the point? You can get an old 386 for just a few dollars and then
you can run Linux. I bought a 486-100 with 20MB for $30 from somebody and I
use it for my gateway firewall machine. I admit, that sort of deal is
probably not common, but a 386 should be easily aquired for this sort of
price.

you could find a friend with a libc6 system and have them compile and
statically link it. it's not perfect, but a lot easier than upgrading
a major version of libc. it might even work.

We survived that last message....it DID not cause the machine to reboot at
all...which is a good thing.

Mar 16 00:57:35 svetlana kernel: possible SYN flooding on port 80. Sending
cookies.
I know what it means to be SYN attacked....I thought the new kernels were
supposed to report the IP from which the floods were coming. Any clues?
I have seen snipets from other peoples' messages files which HAD the IP in it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I missed the original posting...
But, if the image on a monitor wraps it is due to improper
video timing. All video cards allow complete control of the
video timing parameters. These parameters are set in the DEVICE
and MONITOR sections of the XF86config file. Before I go
further you need to know that I am an expert on monitors, not
Linux. So I can't give you the exact changes you need to
make to the files. But I can point you in the right direction.
If the image is wraping horizontaly. This can be due to any
of the following causes.
- Wrong Hsync plarity
- H frequency too low. Should be 32.5khz for 640x480.
Start with the the default value and try increasing
modline values in 10% steps.
- Dotclock too slow.
Verticle wraping is caused by:
- Wrong Vsync polarity
- Trying to display too many lines.
If the vsync rate was too low the monitor would flicker.
You have to get the horizontal presentation correct first,
since it affects the vertical timing as well. Make adjustments
in small steps. Initally you will want to make small adjustments
in the range of +/- 10% or 5%. Only adjust one parameter
at a time.

Hope this helps,

I would happen to believe that if you are asking where to get a FREE SUSE
distribution, then you have probably never installed a linux distribution
before. If you have, you are almost certainly not qualified to set a client
up with it. I don't mean to be offensive, but bluntness sometimes drives
important information home where otherwise it might be ignored. Anybody
with a web browswer can find SUSE and download it. As we all know Linux is
free and so is the SUSE distribution. If you have a fast pipe, or even a
slow one, and you have installed linux before (and have just a little
experience with it), you would know that you could install SUSE, or Debian,
or Redhat by simply doing an FTP install, or even in some cases an NFS
install. You wouldn't have to download anything you didn't need with these
methods.
