Here's an excerpt from some other people in your situation
who seemed to have worked it out:
=====================================================
>Has anybody gotten the IDE version of the Yamaha CRW4416 to
>work under linux? Only the SCSI version is listed on the
>Unix CDRW compatibility list.
I installed Debian Linux on a new machine, with a yamaha 4416E CDRW
drive. I recompiled the v2.0.36 kernel to include IDE/SCSI emulation.
And added a line to the lilo.conf to tell the machine to use IDE/SCSI
emulation for the CDRW drive (See CD-Writers HOWTO). It then all works
fine....
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html]
I then have used cdrecord to write data CDR's with no problems.
According to the cdrecord documentation CDRW's shouldn't be any more
difficult.
=================================================
If you have to recompile the kernel, don't despair, it's pretty
easy. You can do it in about 15 simple steps:
1. Login as root
2. cd /usr/src
3. ftp ftp.kernel.org
4. get the latest linux.x.x.x.tar.gz file
5. Extract source code files under /usr/src:
tar -zxvf linux-x.x.x.tar.gz
6. Start X Windows
7. run "make xconfig" -- check off all options you need in your kernel
8. Save kernel setup file as /usr/src/linux/.config
9. Quit X Windows.
10. Compile the new kernel:
make dep; make clean
make boot
make modules; make modules_install
Copy new kernels files, but please backup any files being replaced in
the /boot directory first!!!
11. cp /usr/src/linux/System.map /boot
12. cp /usr/src/linux/arch/1386/boot/zImage /boot
13. Add a new boot option to lilo.conf:
image=/boot/zImage
label=newkernel
root=/dev/sda1
read-only
14. Run /sbin/lilo -- it will update your boot options
15. Reboot, type "newkernel" at LILO prompt, hold your breath.
...that's a brief run down of what recompiling the kernel involves. It's
pretty easy.

Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 16:29:37 GMT
Hello everyone,
I recently upgraded from RH5.2 to RH6.0 (AfterStep)
I am able to play mp3 files using mpg123 but when I
start x11amp it seems to run a process called 'modprobe'
which seems to run for a while (lot of HD activity)
and then x11amp dies.
Could someone let me know where the problem is?
PS: The HD activity is so heavy that I can't even right
click on x11amp to bring up the options menu so that
I can select e-sound libraries instead of OSS (this
worked on another Linux system with PCI sound card).
Thankx.

Hello All,
I want to use the OS/2 loader or Partition Magic (OS loader) instead of
the default Lilo.
Can I boot up my Linux without using the default Lilo ?
If I make my other OS loader (like Partition Magic or OS/2 loader)
pointing the boot-sector of my Linux partition, can I boot my Linux
without the Lilo ?
Thanks for your kind attention !

HI,
I was looking for a X11 server running under MS Windows,
to connect to my Linux machine.
I had two problems:
- first my Server was in a private network (behind a firewall) so I was not
able to use it to display my Linux sessions
- second I wanted to be able to disconnect, leting running my applications
on Linux,
and reconnect after, and having again control of my applications.
After reading your mails I decided to download VNC and try it.
It's really a great solution for me.
Thank you for this.

I'm having problems with getting my cable modem to work with
the newer 2.2.x kernels. I'm currently using a 2.0.36 kernel with
dhcpcd 0.65 just fine to get an IP address from my provider. Apparently
the dhcp server is a cisco, of which I know no more. Anyways I've just
tried kernel 2.2.8 with all of the updated packages including
dhcpcd-1.3.17pl2 which I got as a source rpm and rebuilt with the new
2.2.8 kernel. I get the following error in my /var/log/messages
connection timed out waiting for a valid dhcp server response.
I haven't had any problems with dhcp using the 2.0.x kernels.
Any clues as to a way to get this to work would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian Seppanen

I tried Caldera SuSe and RedHat
I finally vote for SuSe:
- It's a very complete product
- very simple to install for any body
- It's compatible with RH
- It's not RH !
And the last point is certainly important in my choice.

It seems updating /etc/ld.so.conf is not enough
run it via a wrapper such as the following
/usr/X11R6/bin/rvplayer
=======================
#!/bin/sh
#set this appropriately
RVPLAYER_LOCATION=/opt/rvplayer5.0
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$RVPLAYER_LOCATION:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

the modem at the same time since upgrading to 6.0.
I'll try it and post my results.

As a relative newbie, this may not neccesarily be correct, but you might as
well give it a try.
I had the same problem under RedHat 5.1 and upgraded to 5.2. The problem
was that the kernel used in 5.1 did not support FAT32 partitions used by
Windows. Under kernel 2.0.36 (which comes with 5.2) you should be able to
mount the windows partition with the command
mkdir /mnt/win (which makes the mount point)
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win
cd /mnt/win
The hda1 might not neccesarily be correct. Your windows partition will
probably be in /dev/hda1 but if this fails, you can play around with either
the *a* or *1* to find your windows partition. Once it is mounted you can
simpy change to the directory where the rpm is stored and
rpm -ivh _the pakage_
A further help will be to edit /etc/fstab to include your windows partition.
Good luck

Thanks for the responses to this. I know that AWK may be
overkill, but I am fluent with it and it constantly gets me out
of situations where the other tools (including Perl) would be
far more cumbersome.

As root just type updatedb and it will build the file.
Then you can use locate.
(If you updatedb with cd mounted, it will log that also).

First configuration RH6 can't come close menus work the way their supposed
too.
Second I use an Intellimouse (say what you want about their operating
system but I'll defend their mice to my death) Mandrake comes with imwheel
to use the wheel RH6 I had to add it.
Third inn RH6 I had to add a lot of other software like xcdroast comes with
Mandrake.
Tell them to try it if they don't like it what did it cost the time to
download or $1.99 from cheapbytes and an afternoon.
I have tried both I have also tried the new one from Caldera I am sticking
with Mandrake.
just my humble opinion. John Pisini

I've tried it. It works great if you do fresh install
of a windows on a virtual disk. Performance is almost
as good natively. I can't get sound to work and now
I'm having trouble getting online.
As a raw disk option it sucks and I would caution
against using this option as it screwd up my configuration
the three times I tried.
Just my 2 cents

I have a hard time believing your typical script-kiddy could handle
the steps cited above. I do know that they are quite capable of snarfing
every POP3 and login password passed on the wire, though.
There is no such thing as a secure system. Security is created by making
breaking it difficult. You're operating in a world of illusion if you
believe you can make a system fully secure.
