Since sfx exe's can usually be unzipped with PKUNZIP or WinZip, it stands to
reason that unzip (from the RedHat unzip package) will work, too...

Can someone please answer the following questions about Redhat Linux 5.2
1. Is it a 64 or 32 bit operating system
2. What is the maxium filesystem limit
3. What is the maxium file size limit
4. What is the max file size tar can handle
5. what is the max process per user limit
For you info I am a software developer and we are looking to test and possibly
port to unix (we are currently on AIX, HP, and SUN). We will be converting an
intel box with 2 133 processor 128 Megs of RAM and 27 Gigs of Hard disk space.
I am hoping it will blow the doors off some of the other platforms.
Thanks

It's totaly easy to set up DHCP!
Start yast, choose administration, modify configuration-file, find
START_DHCPD, set it to "yes".
Edit /etc/dhcpd.conf and start dhcpd with
/sbin/init.d/dhcp start. Check /var/log/message and /var/log/warn for
messages.
That's all.
DHCPD will now be started automaticly with every reboot.

Subject: Some RPMs to play with (COL 1.3)
Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 11:48:44 -0700
I have put some RPMs together of glib-1.2.0, gtk+-1.2.0 and apache
1.3.4. They are built on and for Caldera 1.3 systems. However, the
glib and gtk+ packages should work on almost any libc 5 (or 6 for that
matter) distribution. So, These are package betas (not betas of the
software but betas of the RPMs).
If you want to do some testing and install these, I'd be very
appreciative. If there are no problems, their packaging status will
silently move from 'beta' to 'released'. You've got to understand that
these have to potential to screw your system - he he he but I wouldn't
bet
on it. Everything works fine for me - YMMV.
I'd like some feedback on if the packages work correctly for you.
Especially the apache server. There were a lot of changes from the
Apache
server RPM that shipped with COL 1.3 to this one. First off, there were
a
few changes in file location. Next, I modularized every thing I could.
This makes for a completely flexible apache server that is highly
configurable and fast. Modularization wasn't available on the original
Apache 1.3.1 RPM that shipped with COL 1.3 - it was a new and somewhat
untested feature at the time.
You'll find everything here:
http://www.mecworks.com/software/
Some things to note:
* glib-1.2.0 is not 'libc 6'. It is a base library that provides low
level functions for data storage and manipulation used by several
programs, most notably gtk+ uses them. glib is required for
gtk+.
* gtk+-1.2.0 is the next stable version of gtk+ which is used for
gimp
and Gnome. This latest stable version of Gimp (1.0.2) does not use
gtk+-1.2.0, it must have a version from gtk+-1.0.1 to gtk+-1.0.6
(the
previous stable version of gtk+. You can have both runtime
libraries
on your system. You can only have the development packages from one
version though. That way, you can have the old libraries needed to
run gimp and the new libraries to run Gnome and/or develop/compile
newer gtk+ programs.
* glib-1.2.0 is multi-threaded and requires a good implementation of
linuxthreads. I have made an RPM of linuxthreads-0.71. You need
to
install this before you can install glib-1.2.0.
linuxthreads conflicts with the pthread.h header file
from the libc-devel package. The reason is that there is an older
version of a pthread library installed with Caldera's libc.
linuxthreads is intended to replace that older version. Because the
pthread.h header is in the libc-devel package and you need the
devel package to compile programs, you need to force an install
of linuxthreads. That way, you are forcing the linuxthreads
package to overwrite the libc-devel's version of pthread.h.
Install the RPM by doing this:
rpm -ivh --force linuxthreads-0.71-1.i386.rpm
If this bothers you. It shouldn't. I'll tell you how to change
back and put your system in it's original state. Simply remove the
linuxthreads rpm and force a reinstall of the libc-devel RPM:
rpm -e linuxthreads
rpm -ivh --force libc-devel-5.4.46-2.i386.rpm
Voila, your system is back to the state before lnuxthreads was
installed.
Once the Packages have all the quirks worked out of them I will upload
them to Caldera's incoming directory where they should eventually make
it
to the contrib directory.
Thanks!

>Can LINUX be run on an iMac?...
Excuse me for asking, but why would you want to?
It's my knowledge that the iMac (I hardly even looked at them, so dont bother
flaming me if I'm wrong) is only expandable via USB. It's not a machine that
is 'upgradable' in anyway what-so-ever unless referring to adding stuff instead
of changing stuff (swapping video cards, NICs, etc).
With this in mind, I know myself (and a lot of other people I know) would NEVER
think of getting an iMac for this single reason. If you're gonna spend that
much (I know it's not an outrageous amount, but for someone who builds his own
computers for total hardware control and to not pay bloated rates to an OEM
it's a lot of $$) you'd better be sure you want it just the way it is for a few
years.
If an iMac is something you want, and are willing to keep it long enough to get
your money's worth, then go for it (I dont personally know anyone with linux
running on one, but I know it's possible). If you just want the look that all
anti-PC people around here at work are raving about, buy a can of spray paint
and some plexiglass and 'frost' it to your own desired color, cut sime slits or
drill some holes in it for ventilation, now put that on the case instead of the
cover...insta-Mac (well, the look anyway)!

This in no way is an attack on Mac users, or Mac hardware...just the way those
damned ugly things look.

As root type 'cd /', then 'mkdir win95' now if you use /win95 (in a file, on
the command line, whereever) it will work.
What happens is that linux wants to address this new mount as a directory, and
it wants you to tell it which directory to use. so after you mount that sucker
you need to cd to /win95 (just like DOS...except the '/')...if you do a 'ls'
you should then see all of the files on C:\.
Hope this helps and isnt too confusing.

Hi,
The new version of xanim was just released and is
supposed to support the indeo 4 and 5 codecs,
by using a dll.
Has anyone got this to work?
If so, can you detail, any tricks?
I'm using suse6, and I had to edit the makefile
to get it to run. Specifically I had to change the
CC=egcs to cc=gcc, but gcc is egcs in suse6.
It compiled, and produced all the .o files, but
indeo 4 and 5 don't run, and some 3.2 will
run and some won't.
I get sound only on the newer codecs.
Has anyone succeeded?
