expr does not know about floats
(should have been mentioned in the gnu man pages)

But you can use awk, e.g. as follows

 echo '12.3 34.5 67.3' | awk '{ print $1 + $2 + $3 }'

Improvements depend on exactly what you want to do
(more summand, adding numbers in a file, ...).

ufsdump tape images are supposed to be endian-neutral,
but this didn't work correctly until the more recent
releases of Solaris (which exists in both endianisms).

'Tape reading error' does not sound like an endian
problem, unless the restore has done something silly
like a zero byte read as a result of misinterpreting
something on the tape. I would be tempted to try doing
the linux equivalent of...

   truss -tread ufsrestore ....

to see what's really happening.

My SCSI bus has two drives on it, at IDs 1 and 2, which are /dev/sda and
/sdb respectively.

Is there some way to tie this down so that if I add a drive with ID 0,
the existing /dev mappings don't break ? It can be very useful to have
this flexibility in situations where you don't have full control over
the SCSI ID setup.

First, this is not a case of formatting taking up the disk, for the
partitioning does not occupy space on the partition. It's a matter of the
size of the gigabyte.

Second, you are right in that marketing drives the fact that they use
1,000,000,000 bytes as a gigabyte when they sell drives...

I was much impressed with SUSE, however I have a Thinkpad 365 Laptop
on which the X config utils for SUSE failed miserably. To get it
working I 1) installed RedHat 2) saved the X config files to a floppy,
3) reinstalled SUSE, copied the files over.

For a newbie who might have a hardware collection that is off the
Linux mainstream, I might recommend RedHat. The big disadvantage to
this is no KDE. From what I have seen Gnome 1.0 isn't ready for prime
time.

I use a subscription option too - it keeps things under control. Linux
is advancing to rapidly (overall a good thing) to try to surf the
upgrade wave.

I am suffering from similar errors, or at least I was until I had to
sacrifice the memory on my db2 machine for a few days. I have not
found a solution, however, there are several threads regarding this on
IBM's news server (news.software.ibm.com), which is publically

The limit will be governed by system resources and the size of the
media. `Tar' stands for `TApe aRchive,' from its origins as an
archiving program that backed systems up to tape. "File size" would
therefore be limited to the size of the backup media.

Yes, but not as well as on an x86 or even many older Macs.

LinuxPPC is the flavor of Linux you need to run on an iMac. LinuxPPC
R4.1 is the last non-beta release, and it doesn't install on an iMac
except by following a bunch of hacks. LinuxPPC pre-R5 is a beta (alpha?)
of a release that will support the iMac better, but my experiences
indicate that pre-R5 is both difficult to install and riddled with bugs
(this is NOT a criticism of LinuxPPC; it's just a reflection of the fact
that this is alpha/beta software).

If you're looking into a machine for which Linux is a major factor, I'd
recommend you look at the x86 computers rather than a Mac. If you want an
iMac for other reasons and just want to tinker with Linux, then go for it,
but wait for the full release of LinuxPPC R5 (or maybe later). You can
save yourself some hassle later, though, by re-partitioning your iMac hard
drive when you get it. That way, you can use the recovery CD Apple gives
you to restore the system to its "out-of-box" state before you add
software, personal documents, etc., while setting aside space for
LinuxPPC.

FWIW, part of the problem with the iMac is that it's tied to the USB port,
and that support is still new, even in LinuxPPC. This is much of the
reason you need a special install routine to get R4 up, and why most of
the pre-R5 installers I tried didn't work (I finally found one that did,
though).

You may want to subscribe to the comp.os.linux.powerpc newsgroup, where
there are occasional discussions of Linux on the iMac, and more on
LinuxPPC specifically than you'll find in the main Linux newsgroups.

Use Alt-number to get another virtual console and check the case of the
directory tree.

the installation process is Case sensitive in regard to the file names and
directory names.

You may be asking the wrong questions. Try some of these:

1) Which OS best fits my application requirements?

2) What's the hardware price/performance ratio? If you must spend twice as
much on hardware to get similar performace, then maybe that can make the choice
for you...

3) Which OS best meets my hardware requirements? Lack of drivers can kill.

4) Which OS am I more familiar with? How much time/effort will it cost to get
to the same sysadmin plateau with each?

5) Is support a requirement? It community support sufficient or must I pay?

As others have pointed out, Solaris Intel is essentially free licenses for
non-commercial use. For commercial applications no matter what the cost is
it'll be more than Linux.

It's not a question of how much stuff costs, it's a question of what you need
to do and how much each will cost you in money/time/hardware/sweat etc.

The gnome-apps crash very often compared to other Linux programs
(except Netscape, of course ;-).
But as my work does not rely on these apps I havent lost any data. Just
starting the app again and
everything is fine.

The gnome-panel seems to be stable but shows some nasty annoyances: I
cant move the pager
permanently to the position I want, launchers disappear, and currently
Im running two
pagers, where the second came from I do not know.

gdm (the gnome xdm-replacement) seems to be totally useless, as I was
not able to end any session
correctly.

gnome is nice and I like it, but at the moment its more like a toy
than a production
environment.

Oh, and what's a man page? :-)

I use 0.7, it is stable and it works even with my obviosly not
thread-save X-libraries that come with SuSE6.0.

I once tried to compile 0.9 but it complained that my X-libraries are
not thread-save (do not mention thread-aware). I have installed the
original rpm's from SuSE 6.0. Maybe anybody knows how to compile 0.9
without having to recompile X? Are there SuSE-rpm's out that are
thread-save?

Thanks
