Hi!

If I remote login to my system, it is not noted. The command who, w, and
last won't show that I am login. This apply to all account.

If I login on console, it works normally.

Any idea why this happened?

The system is RedHat 5.1 with 2.0.34 kernel.
sh-utils-1.16-12
procps-1.2.7-5
SysVinit-2.74-2
util-linux-2.7-18

Other thing: is there more reliable way for a script to find out where we
login from?

Thanks.

Try the ICQJava version. It requires the JDK for Linux to run - which
is available from http://www.blackdown.org. The ICQJava is a bit buggy,
though...

Another choice might be Licq, which is native for Linux. This one requires
the qt libraries available from http://www.troll.no

I can't seem to install EXISTING partitions under VMWare usint eh make-

It keeps giving me errors. Any ideas or can someone send the safe-hda file to
me so I can edit it for my systems profile.

Run a 'file' command in the wp archive and it will tell you that it is
is actually a .tar archive. (Don't ask me why)

Just run a normal '$ tar xvf filename.gz'

The rest should be obvious.

No matter where you travel to, you'll always meet someone coming the
opposite direction.

I installed SuSE 6.0 today (my third time installing a SuSE distro) and
played with KDE. Absolutely hated it. I much prefer a simple fvwm2 with
not much in it (I'm minimalist by nature).

Also greatly prefer the Red Hat installation over SuSE and find it more
trouble free.

Others will doubtless have the opposite experience / reaction. That's
what makes Linux so interesting. You're not stuck with a single point of
view (a la MS).

Youch! I'll check out the mini-HOWTO when the time comes. I was
hoping that I could just have an extended FAT partition that I could
mount as a swap partition, but I guess there's a little more to it
than that. I'm assuming mkswap is analogous to FORMAT? I guess so,
since mkfs is. So basically the idea is to reformat the partition to
the "right type" each time I go between Linux and OS/2. I'm thinking
maybe it isn't worth the trouble.

Thanks.

I tell folks to first Completely DISABLE all services. Again as you have
pointed out go into the /etc/inetd.conf and comment all entries (be warned
that many services that run from here can also run stand alone! check your
rc files). Then decide which services you need. Many services have better
replacments such as wu-ftp, tcp-wrappers and Yes for your case in particular
Secure Shell. Decide to use those instead. Its more work but its worth the
payback in tightening up your system. Once you have the system in a state
that you like - portscan yourself or have a friend do it. There are many
good software packages that will aid you in this. Good Luck.

I have setup a linux box with both ethernet and modem connections. Ethernet

worked anymore. When I do a traceroute I get a message as follows:

traceroute mail.earthlink.net

Here is the output from the route command:

Netscape's error messages are next to useless since they don't tell
you why it failed. Try using: ping, telnet, and ftp to your system by
IP address, then by host name. If by IP address works and name doesn't,
check the DNS setup. If both work, and you still cannot cannot from
Netscape, check your Apache error log files to see why.

What kind of printer is this? Basically, if it wouldn't print locally off the
linux box (ie winprinter, lexmark) it won't print via samba... Make sure you are
using the right linux filter (driver)

Well, you can just copy onto a DOS floppy with mcopy (don't mount the volume
first). Alternately, mount the DOS floppy (probably under /mnt) and copy it
that way. If you really want to make a Linux floppy, use mke2fs (although,
I think that the overhead for ext2 makes it unattractive for a media as
small as a floppy). The command you would want to use is:

mke2fs -i 1024 -m 0 /dev/fd0

As root.

Amen. xpat2 allows you to make most card movements with a single
mouse click; dragging and dropping is almost never necessary. As well
as Freecell, xpat2 has great implementations of Spider, Seahaven
Towers, and several other solitaires. I have xpat2 running constantly
in one of my fvwm virtual desktops. :-)

While we're on the subject of solitaire games, I'd like to also
recommend pysol. It's written in the Python language and uses the Tk
toolkit, so you need to have both Python 1.5.1 and Tcl/Tk 8.x
installed, but it's well worth the bother. Just yesterday I
downloaded pysol 2.10 from:

        http://wildsau.idv.uni-linz.ac.at/mfx/pysol.html

It's come a long way since version 1.x which itself was an excellent
game. The movement of cards is much faster (not quite as fast as the
champ, xpat2, though :-)), there's more solitaire included (including
Freecell), and there's even an optional selection of different sizes
and styles of card sets. You need to do more dragging and dropping
than you do with xpat2, but I don't think it's too bad in that
respect. Like xpat2, I keep it running constantly.

My recommendation: get both xpat2 and pysol. Both are good enough
that I don't even miss Windows Freecell, Arachnid, or (Klondike)
Solitaire. Along with xbomb and the recent (vastly improved) beta of
xmahjongg, these games go a long way towards keeping me off the
streets. :-)

Try this:

$ cd /dev
$ ls -l cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root            3 Jan 26 02:43 cdrom -> hdc

$ ls -l hdc
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 0 May 6 1998 hdc

Have root give 'other' the same permissions to the device as 'user' and
'group',

# chmod o+r+w /dev/hdc

and see if this works for you.

Cheers,
Ben

Subject: 32-bit (E)-IDE support
Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 09:54:09 +0800

Hi,
I am running Redhat 5.2. I have the hdparm utility preinstalled. I am
curious whether the default setting for my Harddisks is the optimal
setting especially whether the 32-bit (E)IDE support is enabled. When
I check the settings of my HDD in /proc/ide, I see the following in the
io_32bit field.

                            value
min max mode
io_32bit 0
0 3 rw

Thanks in advance
Ryan

Remove/comment out the appropriate line in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers.

This very true. Specifically I have RoadRunner service and they advertised
the speed difference: 192Kbps upstream and 1.5 MBps downstream. In general
for basic to average users (a very large population on the internet now
days), this is the case (ca. 10:1).

For folks who want to do more uploads, you're on the wrong side of the
street (stream).

Hi,

I use the latest ver. of WindowMaker under Debian 2.1. A few days i
installed KDE, but then uninistalled it. KDE apparently changed my
menus and they became fucked up in WindowMaker. I looked at the
menu.hook (in /etc/X11/WindowMaker/) file which is what is being used by
WindowMaker now for its menus. When i edit the file manually, my menu
items can be seen in the menus. However, after i install any other
package the menu.hook file becomes fucked up again and erases my manual
entries...(this file is supposed to be automatically editted and
generated, but how can i keep the stufff that i put in it from erasing??

Thanx for any help,
Konstantin

Subject: Kernel Compile Error in RedHat 5.2

I'm running into an error when I try to compile the kernel (2.0.36) for
RedHat 5.2 with modular support for Ensonique 1370 sound cards
(CONFIG_SOUND=y;CONFIG_SOUND_ES1370=m). I've compiled the kernel
before without any sound card support at all (CONFIG_SOUND=n) with no
trouble and am currently running on the kernel from that effort. This
time I consistently get the following errors from "make boot":

ptrace.c:302: warning: `write_emulator_word' defined but not used
ptrace.c:335: warning: `get_emulator_word' defined but not used
    init/main.o(.data+0x110): undefined reference to `sound_setup'
    make: *** [vmlinux] Error 1

Please let me know if any of you have run across this before or know
enough about C and Linux to have a good idea on how to fix it. I'm not
that knowledgeable about C or I would do it myself. If anyone needs to
see /usr/src/linux/.config or the rest of my "make boot" messages, I can
send them via regular email but didn't want clog up this newsgroup with
them as they are both lengthy files.

Thanks for anything you can do to help,
Carl
