I followed the instruction on the page
http://www.atd.ucar.edu/homes/oncley/micron/micron.html to try to install
linux in my Micron Transport Trek2 laptop. I succeeded in installing X.
However, I have no luck to install my 3COM 3CXEM556 multifunction
card (56k modem + 10baseT LAN). The PCMCIA card is supported under linux
because I installed the same card in other laptop before. The laptop
simply do not see the PCMCIA card. I tried to upgrade redhat linux 5.1
with supplementary floppy so that I can enable PCMCIA support in the process.
The procedure stucked when starting "starting PCMCIA services" .
The existing redhat 5.1 linux was installed before without enabling PCMCIA
in the installation. Can you help me? How can I make the laptop see the
PCMCIA card?
I updated the linux system with latest update file from redhat, including
kernel, kernel-pcmcia-cs, X, etc.

How often is this done with Unix workstations in a larger pool?
To accomplish this goal, we'd need some distributed operating system,
like Plan9.

just use fetchmail to retrieve mail from your pop server and use your
email client of choice to read it. that gives you much more
flexibility. if you have some political objection to using eric
raymond's stuff, you could use gnus, which does about everything.

Also, Red Hat Linux only works on strawberry iMacs. For blueberry iMacs,
you have to use Blue Socks Linux, and for tangerine iMacs, Orange Butt Linux.

Subject: file does/doesn't exist??????
Date: 19 Mar 1999 05:24:36 GMT
I'm a newbie running RH5.2, kernel 2.0.36 on a p-133. Most of the
software i've installed has worked fine (most of it had to be compiled
on my system=good thing). but a few games, plus corel wp7 and wp8,
and VariCAD all have given me the following problem: when install the
RPM or untar the archive (it happens with both types of packages), the
files list properly with the ls command, and the executables are
color-coded as executables, but when i try to run the program, i get
the error message "bash: <filename>: No such file or directory", then,
to see if the file exists, i try to make a directory of the same name,
and get the following error message: "mkdir: cannot make directory
`<filename>': File exists". Also, viewing the file with "less"
produces the expected garbage of any executable. So what's going on?
Is it an executable that was compiled for another system (even though
two of those programs are from the RedHat CD!)? HELP!!!!
Thanks!

Hi all,
Does anyone know of any CDDB capable programs for keeping an inventory
of
my CD's? I have a couple of CDDB capable CD players (XMCD, KCD), but
they don't seem
to have the ability to display the entire inventory of CD's.
I have looked everywhere with no luck.

I already have. Window Maker is my Window Manager of choice. Thus far,
neither KDE or Gnome have shown me any compelling reason to adapt either
one of them. What I need are "productivity applications", not neat
little
trinkets (address books, pagers, dialers, calendars, etc.). All of the
hype has been on the desktop environment, and not enough placed on
something
that will actually enable someone to do productive work. There are
plenty
of Window Managers around (Window Maker, Ice, FVWM2, Blackbox, etc.),
and
another one (KDE/KWM, Gnome/Enlightenment) will actually do not very
much
at all, if anything, to enhance the productivity of a Linux machine.
Give me
a word processor besides the sickened WordPerfect or the bloated Star
Office
that will actually enhance my productivity. Give me a good quality
spreadsheet,
give me a good quality database with a user friendly interface, give me
....
well, you get the idea. There are things in the works, but all the hype
is on
the wrong areas. Window Managers are a dime a dozen on Linux, and
another one
is not going to make the difference whether or not Linux succeeds or
fails.
What is needed is "Applications".
Well, enough of my soapbox. Choose whatever Window Manager you feel
comfortable with. All of the applications work about as well in one as
they do another. All of this KDE/Gnome stuff ain't going to help you
write
that report, produce that spreadsheet, or maintain a database of
whatever.
All that they do is give you a pretty desktop, and that is up to your
particular taste on which desktop environment you choose.

Emacs was the first piece of GNU software, namely a *REALLY, REALLY,
REALLY* powerful text editor.
The first version of Emacs ran on ITS atop TECO, many, many years ago.
Richard Stallman then rewrote it, building a C engine to implement
"Emacs Lisp," and then there has been the better part of 20 years of
development of Elisp code to provide enough extensions to boggle the
mind.
Emacs has in effect become more than merely an editor, but rather an
"application platform."
- There is a news reader, GNUS, that runs atop Emacs.
- There are several mail reader agents that run atop Emacs.
- There is a calculator system that does differential calculus, and
possibly even integral calculus.
- Emacs is noted for providing "intelligent, highly configurable
indenter" modes for many computer languages. If it figures out that the
file you're looking at is a Perl program, or C source code, or a
Makefile, it can provide a wide variety of language-specific services.
It certainly knows how to cope with more computer languages than you are
comfortable with, and likely can cope with some that you're not aware
existed.
This does mean that it's not a "small" piece of software, but with the
growth of Microsoft BloatWare, Emacs is no longer the "Bloated Kid On
The Block."
EMACS originally stood for something resembling "Editor MACroS," which
*probably* refers to it originally being constructed as a group of TECO
macros.
TECO code looks like:
<.-z; ! scan file args !
::s ::s@"s
.uy :s "s 1r | zj' qy,.x9 ::s .,zxzhk 0; ! indir file !
| .uy :s "s 1r | zj'
:qx"e qy,.xx 0,.k ! one file arg !
| :qy"e qy,.xy 0,.k ! two file args !
| @^A/Too many files specified/ 13^T 10^T hkekm8ex''' ! more than 2 !

It is not too surprising that they decided to move something like Lisp
that is a little easier to read and write...

I'll admit it, I know shitloads about windows, but shit about linux. I'm
new, running red hat 5.2. After the installation and restarting the
computer, my system crashed, telling me that there wasn't my hard drive
wasn't a system disk or something (not an active partition??). I put in the
emergency disk and it booted just fine, mounted my root and started xwin.
Now if I want to boot it up, i need that disk, it tells me i don't have an
active partition without it. What do i need to do to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance

Are there other ways to trash the MBR? My LILO went off the tracks
(RH 5.2) when I tried to install an Evergreen CPU upgrade. This
involved swapping my old AMI BIOS for a MRBIOS. The new BIOS seemed
to work (through one boot) but after the next power cycle all hell
broke loose. At first I was getting LI <hang> and now I am getting
L 01 01 01 01 01 ... The RH installer claims it can't see my scsi
bus at all (can't load the appropriate driver).
The machine has not been bootable since. I put the old CPU back and
reinstalled the old BIOS. Nothing has helped. I don't have a
rescue disk (oops). I tried reinstalling the entire OS from RH
install diskette but the install diskette claims it can't load
the right driver for my scsi card. I installed RH originally,
several versions in fact, using this same scsi card, scsi cdrom
and scsi disk, so I'm puzzled.
So I'm now thinking "hardware?" and so have taken my trusty old
scsi disk to work and put it on a working Linux scsi bus. This
disk has *never* had M$ ware on it, it has been a Linux boot disk
all its (2.5 year) life. When I look at the partition table
it looks very bizarre:
Disk /dev/sdc: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 263 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 * 1 9 66496+ 83 Linux native

Partition 2 has different physical/logical beginnings (non-Linux?):
phys=(32, 0, 1) logical=(8, 72, 1)
Partition 2 has different physical/logical endings:
phys=(96, 65, 63) logical=(25, 26, 63)

Partition 4 does not end on cylinder boundary:
phys=(1015, 65, 63) should be (1015, 254, 63)
(it used to look just fine using fdisk under the linux that was booted
from this same disk). So, has the disk got trashed or is there
a difference between red hat 5.1 fdisk and red hat 5.2 fdisk?

But I don't know what I did! :-) any ideas? Can a BIOS install
actually cause scribbling on your hard drive? what a dreadful idea.

I was having the same problem with a STB Velocity 128 under RH5.2 I was
trying to run 800x600 at 16 bit color, which the card is more than capable
of handling, but it wouldn't even start X. What I had to do was not use the

Linux RedHat 5.2 comes with Xfree86 3.3.2.3. It does not suport RivaTNT based
cards. The new version (3.3.3.1, available at http://www.xfree86.org/) does. I
do have a Diamond Viper 550 (very much the same card at the STB) and it works
fine (...and fast!).
You might try to shortcut and install the Xserver that has been mailed to you.
But the mismatch with the other parts of X might lead to any sort of troubles.
The clean, safe and not-so-time consuming solution is to download the whole
Xfree86 3.3.3.1 binaries and install them. The installation instructions that
come with the documentation are clear enough.

Hi all:
I've just configured my sondblaster under Linux 2.2.3.
I compiled kernel with sound support as modules.
I added to conf.modules:
alias sound sb
parameters sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
When I do modprobe sb, the modules load w/o any errors, and I hear quite
annoying hiss comming from the speakers.
The card doesn't produce *any* hissing under NT.
Any ideas? My distro is Debian 2.1 for what that matters...

Don't know if Debian has sndconfig but you might give it a try. It all
depends on what kind of card it is (Vibra, Soundpro-chip?). If it is a card
with the Soundpro chip you can look at the CMI HOWTO in my signature.

Here's an idea: when the mixer is initialised it turns on the
'line in' or mic. That would certainly produce a hiss.
If this is the case, just use xmixer or something similar to turn
it off.

Try this:
reboot the system. At the lilo boot: prompt, assuming your boot image is called
Linux type the following:
boot: Linux append="no-hlt"
Reload the modules and see if the hissing goes away. If it does, it is likely
caused by the cpu coming in and out of "halt on idle" ... probably due to
network traffic appearing at the ethernet (or it could be caused by speaker
cables too near your video or network cables). Do you also hear the hissing
when you move the mouse?
Anyhow, if that fixes it ... live with it if you can because running the
machine in this mode makes the CPU a lot hotter and the machine less stable.

I had a similar problem until I used a mixer program to turn up the
volume on the output, no more hiss. (SB16, RedHat 5.0, NT4.0)

The largest ones I have noticed are:
1. Package management - .deb, .rpm, .tgz, etc.
If you do a lot of system maintenance via packages, this can be really
important. I think this is one of the big reasons that Red Hat is so
popular, is that it's package tool is fairly easy to use and understand
for a newbie, but with enough flexibility for some power users. (Haven't
tried it, can't speak for myself. '.tar.gz' just never bothered me for
some reason.. <g>)
2. Sysinit style
BSD, System V, or mix'n'match. Most people say that Slackware is very
BSDish in sysinit. RedHat is SysV style. Cannot yet speak for other
distros, but will soon. Got 'em all coming from LinuxMall.

Use "bc" or even "awk"
The syntaxes are different . If you've got a bunch of numbers, use your shell
script to build a program string and pass it to the app.
man or info on bc and awk for more...
