Go to the Redhat site and download the appropriate RPMs to update XFree86.
I did the same thing when I installed the files that I downloaded from the
XFree86 site. All I had was a couple windows and nothing else. Give this a
try.

Actually, I think that you misunderstood my post. What I was attempting
to get across was the fact that way too much hype was being spent on
the Window Managers, and not enough energy being spent on applications
that are actually needed. Linux needs applications, not another Window
Manager. It is extremely difficult to work with applications that do not
exist, or are in the very very early stages of development (which is
where
most of the productivity applications are for Linux).

I understand that both Gnome and KDE have underlying features like
corba,
etc. that will "eventually" enhance/improve applications that have yet
to
be written for use on Linux. But today, Gnome, KDE, Window Maker, Ice,
FVWM2,
FVWM95, XFCE, OLVWM, etc. actually do nothing for the average Joe who
needs to
produce that report for the boss, whether it is a spreadsheet or a word
processing
document. All that the Window Manager does is provide an interface
between the
application and the user, and the applications don't exist.

Status: We have Users, We have Interface. We have databases. We have
Apache.
We have one of the best OS's going in this day and age. We have NO
applications
(of the windows sense for the average Joe) that are polished enough to
stand
up against the Windows World and be practical for every day usage.

Now, with that being said:
Emacs is what I currently use to process my documents. I use enriched
text
and/or LaTex (depending on the circumstances) for my word processing,
Dismal
for my spreadsheets, and bbdb for my address book. Using Forms I have
been
able to create a few small databases for inventory purposes, but need to
find
something better. The calendar/diary programs make for a wonderful
appointment
book. I have even occasionally used emacs to browse the web, read mail
and
newsgroups (never could get used to GNUS).

On the other hand, my daughters (all three of them) use StarOffice for
all of
their word processing (emacs isn't quite in their vocabulary). I use it
when
compatability with MS Word 95/97 is required (other systems/people have
problems
with none Microsoft formats - they just don't know what to do/how to
handle them).

You like xemacs, I like emacs. Both are fine for our purposes. But, for
the
average Joe/Sally/secretary/etc. "applications" of the type used in the
windows world are what is required for Linux to be anything more than a
small
niche OS. Another "hyped" Window Manager is not going to fix it, and
StarOffice
isn't what I would call a "quality" application.

I have a slightly different AppleTalk problem...

I set up netatalk just fine (with a ton of help from another source :-) and
I can share files. But I can't PRINT! Can anyone help me out here? I
downloaded the drivers from epson and loaded them on the Mac. Then I go to
the Chooser on the Mac. The icon for the SC 600 is on the left side, but
when I select it, nothing appears on the right side. Is this a problem with
the Mac or the Linux server? I have Samba running and can print from
Windows, so I know its not the printer...

Thanks,

Aaron Dershem.

I've also seen this. It seems to happen when I send mail from Netcsape
Communicator 4.51 to our SMTP server. I'm running the Caldera 1.3
distribution(2.0.36 kernel). The send operation seems to take a long time, then
when it finishes, in.identd is hogging CPU cycles (>90%). As a workaround you
can "killall -HUP in.identd". That seems to restore some temporary sanity. I
haven't been able to track it down more than that for now. Anybody have any
bright ideas?

I am not an expert, but security is there because of the millions upon
millions of people for more than 20 years before you who honestly found
out that it was an important way to prevent you and your machine from

Hmm. Really amazing. :) Anyway I'd like to solve the problem but
I don't have enough programming or debugging skill.
All I found is that when I run linuxconf with gdb:

gdb) run
Starting program: /bin/linuxconf

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

I tried to compile linuxconf src package, but I don't know
where I can find gd*.h stuffs. --; That's all I can
do. Please somebody help me out there~~~

Considering that neither of the above versions of IE runs on x86, the
only people that could make it run on Linux would be Microsoft.

It's both, although the former tends to be worse than the latter.
However, the latter is often the case when attorneys represent themselves
(generally a bad idea, too).

We used to refer to the "My Girlfriend's Divorce Shool of Law," the
phenomenon in which a client (usually a woman in a domestic matter; i
can't explain why) tries to explain the law and what she's entitled
to (inevitably being thoroughly incorrect) to her attorney, using
what she (thinks she) knows from what happened to someone else. This
is frequently an early warning sign that you're dealing with a "client from
hell."

Real modems won't disappear.

As for what Linux will do: think ADSL or cable modems.

I have a Tekram 680 (the ISA one... not the VL)... and Linux can see the
controller
without any kernel mods... are you talking about an enhanced driver that
allows faster
disk access? I always thought these controllers implemented caching
through their
hardware (that is why you can install SIMMs on them) - and all of the
setup functions were through an on-board BIOS (I am making an assumption
here that the VL is the same as
the ISA -- at least the manual makes this out to be true)).

In answer to your question, I am not aware of any driver(s), though I am
interested
in the topic...
