The information that you need should be in the manual that came with the

: What is the best way to set up a user so he is automatically put into a
: mailreader (eg. elm) when he logs in, and is automatically logged off when

Wouldn't adding a line to their .bashrc file like

exec elm

do the trick... Hang on...

Yep... I just tested it between my two uni accounts...
exec elm works quite nicely.

(you might want to remove elms ability to access shell commands though.
It'll probably need a fiddle with the source and a recompile)

I've seen sillier. Plug'n'Play mousemats, anyone?

They were next to the ordinary mousemats, and were identical, apart from the
higher price tag!

Note the redirection of followup; this question has absolutely nothing
to do with the use of the X Window System...

On Mon, 22 Mar 1999 23:06:01 -0600, Leroux <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
>How Do You Mount A Zip drive in Linux 5.2?

1. You have to determine what its device name is.

If it's a SCSI unit, it's probably associated with /dev/sda, /dev/sdb,
/dev/sdc, ...

Try (as root):
# fdisk -l

This should list all of the disks on your system, and the partitions on
those disks. Some of those should correspond to the Zip drive.

Note that the above use of fdisk doesn't mess with the data on your
disk. Not so for step 2...

2. You might need to establish new partitions on the disk. Supposing
the disk is /dev/sdc, then partitions would be enumerated as /dev/sdc1,
/dev/sdc2, ..., and you would establish new ones by using "fdisk" on
/dev/sdc thus:

# fdisk /dev/sdc
[ and do commands to establish partitions ]

followed by suitable commands to establish filesystems on those
partitions.

Supposing you set up one partition on the disk, you might then do:

# mke2fs /dev/sdc1
to build a new filesystem.

Note that all of these commands *do* mess with what's on the disk. If
there is already data on the disk, you DO NOT want to do step 2. You
want to proceed to Step 3.

3. Mount the filesystems.

a) Establish "mount points." Filesystems are always mounted atop
directories. Supposing /dev/sdc1 is an ext2 filesystem on the Zip
drive, and you want to find that under /ZIP, then the following would
be appropriate:

# mkdir /ZIP
# mount -t ext2 /dev/sdc1 /ZIP

If it's a DOS partition, then try:
# mkdir /ZIP
# mount -t msdos /dev/sdc1 /ZIP

You probably don't want this to get mounted by default every time you
reboot your system, as if the disk isn't in the drive, things May Not
Work Too Well...

Subject: DDS-3 SCSI-2 Tape drive problems...
Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 20:44:31 GMT

We have a Dell server box with a Seagate/Archive DDS-3 DAT tape drive
we are having trouble with. I Just talked to the Dell tech., and he
is claiming we need a special device driver for the DDS-3 tape drive,
which is somehow different from a standard SCSI 2 tape drive. Now, this
guy admitted that he is not 'UNIX Certified', but was insisting we
needed a bleeding edge device driver for the tape drive. He also
suggested we might need a newer driver for the SCSI controller.

We have RedHat 5.2 installed (stock kernel 2.0.36).

The SCSI controller is a Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra Wide controller:

(scsi0) <Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 15/0
(scsi0) Wide Channel, SCSI ID=7, 16/255 SCBs
(scsi0) Downloading sequencer code... 419 instructions downloaded
scsi0 : Adaptec AHA274x/284x/294x (EISA/VLB/PCI-Fast SCSI) 5.1.2/3.2.4
       <Adaptec AIC-7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter>
scsi : 1 host.

The tape drive claims to be an Archive Python:

Vendor: ARCHIVE Model: Python 04106-XXX Rev: 715G
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 6, lun 0

Does it make sense to upgrade the kernel? Or is the Dell guy just plain
ignorant?

Hello ,
I am runing Linux Red Hat 5.2 ; Kernel 2.0.34
I would like to upagrade to Kernel 2.2.4
To do this i can download the sources and run make, but i heard that
with Red Hat, that can be done differently, and more easily ...

Second, i would like to know what does a recompilation alter on the
system :
LILO config ?
Printers and Ethernet config and drivers ?
What will i have to do after recompile so that the system works OK ?
Do i need to save important files before recompiling ?

Thank you for helping ...

There is another package called hummingbird or something like that.
Kind of expensive, but nice.

SCO also sells an X Server (Xview I think), but it's junk. I unloaded
it as soon as they installed it at work. I just split my local hard

Hello Eric,
the simlest way to to this, is replacing sh (or whatever shell is used)
of that user in /etc/passwd with the mailreader.
In this case the user has no chance to do then the things
that particular program allows him to do. And when he exits
the program, he will be logged out.

Try XF86_SVGA -version, this lists all supported chipsets. Youll
need a quite recent Version of XFree86 for your RivaTNT chipset, Id
suggest to get the latest-and-greatest 3.3.3.1.

I edit foo v1.0 and save it as v1.1
I further edit v1.1 and save it as v1.2

Now I copy foo v1.0 to - say foo2 v1.0- edit this file and save it at

At this stage I want to apply the same changes to foo2 v1.1 as I did in
foo from v1.1->v1.2
Assume that the parts where changes need to be made shall be
    * identical in foo v1.1 and foo2 v1.1  BUT

Is there a way of doing this with diff or so???

For the file system in question, do this as root:

        # debugfs -R "icheck 296166" /dev/hdb5

You'll get an inode number. Then, take that inode number and:

        # debugfs -R "ncheck <inode-number>" /dev/hdb5

This will return a name relative to that file system. For example, if
/dev/hdb5 is the partition that contains "/var", and the filename you get back
is "/log/messages", then the actual file is "/var/log/messages".

One indication that it's a Whinemodem is the price is too good to
be
true...WinModems are cheaper 'cause they're missing half the
parts.

At some point someone's gonna have to come up with a WinModem
driver for Linux, since the price of Winmodems is starting
to drive the other stuff off the market.

As with most things in Linux, CTRL-ALT-DEL can be configured to do
pretty much whatever you want it to do. Entries in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
and /etc/inittab configuration files combine to tell the computer what
to do when the buttons are pressed.. There'll be lines starting with
ca and ctrlaltdel. You just need to make sure that they point to the
appropriate command, such as
/sbin/shutdown -r now
if you want to use that sequence to reboot, or
echo 'CTRL-ALT-DEL has been disabled'
if you want it to do nothing but display a message.

Using your example, a quick way would be to backquote any commands:

echo Blah `date -R` | sendmail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Optionally, if this will be in a script, you could assign everything to
a variable and then use it. For example, in Perl:

$words = "Blah \n";
$words .= `date -R`;

or, all at once:

$words = "Blah \n" . `date -R`;

Hope this helps,
Jeremy

Of course one would have to prove in a court of law that that is how the
work was created, and that in order to do so the person had to copy both
of the works-- not use them, copy them. It is perfectly legal to
paraphrase a work-- ideas are not copyrighted and teh courts will resist
any attempt to use copyright to limit the use of ideas-- copyright fails
if the work is the only way of expressing the idea, even if the person
uses the identical phrases.
Thus the person prosecuting you for copyright infringment would have to
prove that in order to make that XOR you actually copied his work. (I
could imagine arguments on both sides, and it could depend on the judges
breakfast that morning).

I've had an awful time getting NT and Solaris to co-exist with each other.
My multiboot SMP machine is running on a Tyan Tomcat Pentium 200MMX dual
machine. Award Bios, 4.51 PG, dated 5/13/98.

Win NT 4.0, sp3
Win 95
Dos 6.22
Linux 2.0.33
Solaris x86 2.6

The problem exists between Solaris and NT. The system is multibooted using
System Commander v3.01, and has worked fine in that regard. The necessary
partitions are hidden from each other (linux swap and solaaris), but
NT wants to clobber the solaris partition.

EIDE controller 0
Drive 0 850MB WD850H
Drive c: Win NT boot and DOS 6.22 boot
        Drive f: Win 95 boot
Drive 1 Quantum Fireball 2.1GB
        part 0 Linux
        Drive D: FAT
        Drive E: NTFS

Eide controller 1
Drive 0 Seagate 4.3 GB medallist
        part 0 Solaris 2GB
        Part 1 FAT 1GB
        Part 2 unallocated

NT's diskadmin reports incorrect partition sizes for the third hard drive
where solaris lives. Solaris, DOS, Win95 have no problem seeing the other
Microsoft FAT volumes on the third hard drive, but NT refuses to. The drive
is recognized as LBA, and its logical cylinders are less than 1024. Solaris
is installed in the lower portion of the 4GB, beginning in the 1st GB.

I've tried formatting the 3rd drive as an NTFS volume of 2GB, and Solaris,
but NT keeps clobbering the partition. Disk Admin is bad news for Solaris
so far as I can tell. This is my second drive, the previous being a 4.3GB
Fujitsu.

I hate to think I've got to resign myself to buying another hard drive to
get stupid NT to co-exist with Solaris on the same drive!
any ideas?
