Build your own system if you feel comfortable doing it. You'll avoid the
microsoft tax. If you don't want to build it try VA Research(I think it's
the name). They sell systems preinstalled with linux and from what I here
are pretty good!!

Hi,
The Victoria Linux Users Group has Red Hat's 5.9 beta "Starbuck"
tar/zipped, and is about a 450 MB download. It unzips to about 520
MBs. The ftp server isn't all that busy so you should be able to get
pretty good transfer speed.

I'm using the 5.9 beta now and it is pretty good, but does have a few
problems. The nice thing though is that it includes KDE and GNOME in
the install.

Another solution might be to buy a $2 copy from Cheapbytes. Even after
exchange and shipping it will still be a good buy and you'll have a hard
copy to keep.

i'm sorry, but it does not work

two things that work for me (without passing options to mount) are:

                     % mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

                      % mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

anytime i try to use mount with a single argument the program says that
it can't find "whatever" in /etc/mtab or /etc/fstab

the crux of the problem is "mount" that does not recognize the device/
the mount point/ that, AFAICT, are _properly_ described in /etc/fstab
(i used only linuxconf to modify /etc/fstab)

yes, it is strange...

Lilo understands hexa numbers, for 1280x1024, you can use 0x31A. Personnaly I
found that the 60 Hz
gives me too much of a headache, so I stick with 1024x768 @ 16bpp (0x317).

I also noticed that the support for 24 bit doesn't seem to be working 100%.
For instance, the colors on
Netscape aren't showing up inside the toolbar.

If you find a way to go above 60Hz, I'd really like to know how.

Have fun

Hi,
I am trying to install Midnight Commander 4.5.27. I ran configure, and

Make. Stop." I looked in the Makefile and it is empty. There were no
errors that caused configure to stop. Why won't it make?

Subject: Script Problems with CR/LF's
Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 22:35:25 -0800

Hi,

I just spent a few hours tracking down a problem that has to do with
CR/LF's in scripts. First my setup:

Fairly Generic Redhat 5.2 Linux System (x86)
Tcl/Tk 8.0
Bash Shell

I had just downloaded the newest version of TkCon (1.5) and I was unable
to get it to properly execute, Even though it had the requisite:

#!/bin/sh
# \
exec wish "$0" ${1+"$@"}

In the first 3 lines, whenever I tried to execute it I got

bash: ./tkcon.tcl: No such file or directory

And yes I have both a /bin/sh (linked to bash) and a wish in /usr/bin,
After about 1 1/2 hours of sleuthing (and khexedit) I discovered that
TkCon 1.5 has '0x0d 0x0a' (CR LF) when normal unix scripts like to see
just a 0x0A (LF).

A quick
    tr -d "\r"

Fixed me up just fine, but I'm still a bit bothered. I find it hard to
believe I've been able to dodge this problem for the last 10+ years
(this is the first time I have ever run across it), I also find it hard
to believe that the CR's give bash that much grief.

* Is this problem well known?
* Is there an system option to change Bash's behavior to deal with CR's
in a nicer way?
* Are we all doomed to run dos2ux or tr past all tcl scripts that were
edited on dos systems?
* Why doesn't redhat come with dos2ux?
* Am I missing something obvious?

Tcl seems to handle the CR/LF's just fine, it really seems to be a bash
problem (and perhaps all shells?), however it seems like this problem
could really hamper cross platform scripting.

Thoughts?

I got a problem with Key mapping in X-windows, I don't know how it

Now, whenever I use xiterm or netscape, I can't do backspaces. In
xiterm, when I try doing backspaces, it shows a "~" in the terminal.
And in Netscape, it's actually doing a del instead of a backspace...
Could anybody help me?

Thanks a lot,

Eh well, I love backwards compatibility, but if it happens to speed things up, go
for it I say. The thing is that as long it dosn't act like a Micro$oft POS, sure
:) The thing about it really is, is speed. If it does happen to increase speed,
sure! If not (which I hear from some people), then I prefer the older i386 method.

What I did was,

A) I used RPM to remove the version that came with redhat
B) used ns-install and told it to use /opt/netscape as its home=20
directory
C) added /opt/netscape to my PATH
D) added MOZILLA_HOME=3D/opt/netscape; export MOZILLA_HOME to=20
/etc/bashrc

Works great. D was added so netscape would run Java

This is the PHP-3 module for Apache. (The one that comes with Redhat only

Well, alphabetically speaking, since "R" comes before "S", I would say
Red Hat. Just kidding.

I've heard both are good, but since I use Mandrake 5.3 (which is based
on Red Hat 5.2), and have also used the "original" RH 5.2, I'm biased
towards Red Hat. The installation (exactly the same process on either
distro) went quite smoothly for me (and I have my system dual-booting
with Win 98 as well as Ethernet connecting with another Win 98 pc at
home. Samba setup and printer/file sharing was smooth
too--eventually). Ofcourse "smoothly" is subjective--YMMV.

I think Suse comes with StarOffice 5 and KDE(?) (Mandrake comes with
WP 8 and KDE). With the "original" RH 5.2 I had to download KDE, WP 8,
and StarOffice to install them.

All-in-all, I'm pretty satisfied with an "enhanced" Red Hat 5.2 (
http://www.linux-mandrake.com ).

I've been running FreeBSD and Linux, and I've never had any of those crash yet.
Windows 98 can stay running for a couple of days, that's the best case. But if I
use Cygnus' Cygwin-32 programming tools, Win98 becomes real unstable or crashes.
I've heard Windows NT is better than 98, but I don't know... it's awfully
expensive. Gee, I can hardly wait until Windows 2000 comes out! ;-) Linux and
FreeBSD both run way faster than 98, as Win98 is awfully bloated. But, it's hard to
get by without Windblows sometimes, especially if you're into electronic
music/multimedia. X still doesn't support multimedia the way Windows does. But
then again, that's what Windows is: a desktop toy with all the bells and whistles.

Wanna hear a funny joke?

I think he means the kind of colors you get at the console, via the setterm
command. With setterm, you can set the text foreground, background, reverse video
color, etc. Like, say you want the man pager to display man pages with white text,
but instead of reverse-video white, you can use cyan instead of white reverse
hilight, that sort of thing.

Just check out man setterm.

Subject: Compiling ELF, AOUT programs...

I have a question about compiling ELF, AOUT programs. How do I tell
gcc/ld what format I want the executable in? AFAIK, gcc compiles ELF
executables by default, but how do I get gcc/ld to produce an AOUT
executable? (Not that I want to, but what procedures would I follow
just in case).

Also, what are these files for?

/usr/lib/Mcrt1.o /usr/lib/crtbeginS.o /usr/lib/crti.o
/usr/lib/crt1.o /usr/lib/crtend.o /usr/lib/crtn.o
/usr/lib/crtbegin.o /usr/lib/crtendS.o /usr/lib/gcrt1.o

I thought that /usr/lib/crt1.o and friends where for the AOUT
executable library. ELF doesn't require them, right?

Right now, I'm running the "old" libc5 on Slackware, which doesn't yet
have glibc2.xx. I noticed that if I build glibc-2.0.6, and specify
/usr/lib as my destination, these files get overwritten:

/usr/lib/Mcrt1.o /usr/lib/crtbeginS.o /usr/lib/crti.o
/usr/lib/crt1.o /usr/lib/crtend.o /usr/lib/crtn.o
/usr/lib/crtbegin.o /usr/lib/crtendS.o /usr/lib/gcrt1.o

So maybe I should put these *.o files in a different directory so that
the libc5 *.o files don't get overwritten? Also, does glibc-2.0.6
have a different set of include files? If so, should I put them in a
different directory to prevent them from overwriting my libc5 include
files?

BTW, I couldn't find glibc-2.1.0 anyplace, because most ftp sites
state that glibc-2.1.0 has "been removed so some political issues can
be worked out". That makes the most current available glibc version
2.0.6, correct?

What to do. ;-)

the unsupported version of glibc netscape, and now it's saying that i have a
segmentation fault every time i run it, and when i run the libc version of
