I'm going up to Cambridge on Monday for a briefing on Lotus' future
directions. I'll find out when their Linux port will be available.

A Linux port has been promised sometime this year. But given the
trouble Lotus is going through to get R5 out on supported platforms the
actual release date is anyones guess.
It would be a simple thing to host Domino on an NT or Sun box for the
time being...when the Linux version comes out, migrate.

That is because . is not in your $PATH. Add something like:

PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin:.
export PATH

to your .bash_profile file. It is a good idea to always type ./configure
in
case there is a different configure in your path and you end up executing
a program you didn't intend to.

Yes it is. By April 19th version 6.1 will come out. It contains Kernel 2.2.3 and
KDE 1.1. These can be updated on 6.0, however, with not too much trouble.

You can use the libggi svgalib wrapper which converts svgalib calls to
GGI calls which in turn use the framebuffer.

Make "exec gnome-session" the last line in your .xinitrc.

Sounds like you have a file in the print queue which can't be deciphered by the
printer driver. Try using lpc to clear it.

Well, it's doubtful that all companies would stop making "real" modems.
What's much more likely is that "real" modems will be made, but in an ever
decreasing number and at an ever increasing price. Fortuneately, this will
probably not be a problem within the next 2 or 3 years, as xDSL and Cable
Modems should be much more prevalent. Just hang in there a while longer,
and you won't have to worry 'bout it.

Of course, this may or may not do a lot of good for mobile users.

Imagine my shock as I found out, that KDE does not have ONE

And crashes considerably less.
My first Linux box was a 486 DX/33 with either 8 or 24 megs of RAM, I
can't remember which. It was fast, shockingly faster than Windows, even
though it was running on a UMSDOS partition. Of course, when I moved to
ext2 it was wuch faster. I ran Netscape and Doom all the time. Still do.
For me, starting up X and fvwm was about 12 seconds more trouble than it
was worth, though. And it still is, though the window manager is AfterStep
and the time is about 30 seconds. But when I did run X, it was pretty
fast.

Subject: Cant connect to ISP
Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 18:09:43 GMT

I have been trying for three months now to connect to my ISP. I'm
running RH 5.2.
I just received new instructions from my ISP (which dosen't support
Linux).
My ISP "erols" says to "compile" PPP, TCP/IP, and SLIP support into
the kernel, not as a module.

My question, Is this similar to copying "ppp-on, ppp-off, and
ppp-on-dialer" into /etc/ppp directory?

My reason is that I tried to compile the kernel some time ago, and
couldnt. Yes I am a newbie.
I've never seen pure, simple, instructions, or HOWTOs, on how to compile
the kernel. Any help would be appreciated.

How beginner? I have lot's of experience with OS's and unix, I

Some of the howto's are good, but there's a lot of stuff in the
howto's, and not all of them have a high percentage of good
content. With general basic stuff, howto's are useful, but
if I want to do my own stuff, I have to glean info from available
sources, experiment a little, and hack together something that
does what I want (though probably not very "gracefully").
I want to be able to have a good source of information so
that I can know how to do things (and if I can do things, and
how to do them correctly) before I implement them. And I
also want to get a general knowledge of everything, when
you experiment, you usually end up with large portions of
important stuff missing.

Also, I haven't posted any questions here yet, I've managed
to solve all my problems (so far), and there have been
many. I received the RedHat CD last friday, and now, I
have managed to setup X-window (on an i740 card), and dialup.
Right now I've got linux running nice and smoothly.

Then, I must have restarted the lpd after making a false entry
during printtool setup. I remember that because I entered
erroneously "lpr -h -Plp" in the remote queue field.

Well... I think that a part of the blame should go to "Printtool".
It should have told me when I made a wrong entry. Oh well...

Is it true that /dev/printer is not being created when I do
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd start" if I have a wrong
content in the /etc/printcap file?

Hi Scott,

rpm -ivh is your solution. Do this with the gtk and the Glib rpm. You will
have to run ldconfig after the install. If you
want to compile with the newer gtk (1.2) then you will have to update the
dev packages. If you are using deb's I can't tell you how to fix the problem
but I'm sure there's a simular solution.

Regards Hans
