hi

everything on my box works fine but yesterday i booted in single user
mode. After some basic stuff I was prompted for the root password. I
typed in the correct password but I got permission denied. I definately
used the correct password but it wasn't possible for me to log in.
Is the single user root password different from root ???

thanx

Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 09:40:28 GMT

which process determines ppp.pid permissions?

In RH6.0 Enlightenment 15
with ppp-2.3.8-/var/run/ppp.pid-rw-rw-r--
Having copied the scripts from /usr/doc/ppp*/scripts to /etc/ppp and
plugging in my particulars, setting pppd suid, and making ttyS0 readable
to pppusers,GNome modem lights and dialer work for users in that group.
command from the console is /etc/ppp/ppp-on/off. dialer applet says
pppon and pppoff.

In Mdk7.0 Enlightenment 16
with ppp-2.3.10,-var/run/ppp.pid -rw-------
Having copied /etc/ppp from RH6.0
users are able init the ppp with the dialer applet, but cannot stop it
nor read the .pid (modem lights)
changing the read permissions on ppp.pid resolves, but I don' see a place
where those permissions are set in the process. Appending a line to the
script seems backwards

Gooday!

I run a small ISP and recently a problem cropped up that is beating me up
pretty bad. I am not sure if it is a DNS or Sendmail issue, or both.

Customers dialup and when they try to get their email some of them have a
problem.

Those that have the in/out server set up as the domain DO NOT get mail and
DO get an error message that says in effect "server not found".

Those that enter the IP address of the mail server for the in/out setup get
mail just fine.

I have dumped and setup DNS fresh. I have gone through all the linuxconf
entries and I think they are correct. Yet....with all this... the problem
persists!

Can anyone help? If you prefer to email directly please use:

Hi. I have read Software RAID mini HowTo but it is fairly old. I'd like
to know where I could find recent information. For instance, RedHat
stock kernels come with a RAID patch, but there are RAID0, 1 and 5
options in the kernel configuration and raid*.o modules are there (I'm
using kernel 2.2.14). What is the difference between RAID with the
patches and the kernel's originals?

Thanks and regards

Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 05:54:26 -0600

Ok, I've seen a lot of problems with older kernels and LS-120 drives...
Well, I've got a nice new 2.2.15 kernel, have the ide-floppy.o module
compiled in and ready to go....... and yet I seem to have this
interesting little quirk I can't get rid of.
It seems that if I ACTUALLY have a 1.44 floppy drive linux can't figure
out what an LS-120 is (except when the Kernel on the install CD loaded),
disable the Floppy, get back SuperDisk, enable floppy, lose SuperDisk.
I'd very much like to be able to use both if at all possible. Anyone
got any ideas?
I've considered recompiling my bloody kernel, but even if I could
remember HOW to recompile the kernel it beats the hell outta me as to
what to change since ls-120 support IS compiled in, albeit a little
buggy.

Anyone who can help.... I'd greatly appreciate it

I think RedHat is a wonderful choice...
but if you use a Pentuim Class system, get Mandrake. It's based on RedHat, but is
compiled specially for 586 and above.

But if you are not in the least bit accustomed to *nix interfaces and are even the
least bit slow in the computer literacy dept I would say that Corel Linux is a good
choice.

If you have a highspeed internet connection, I recommend using the fact that you can
download linux distribs for free and try out the ones that interest you and see
which you prefer.

I appear to be having the exact same problem. The wierd part is that I followed
the exact steps, have a very similar machine (8500/120 128MB) and get the same
message.

If you hear back on a different group please post here.

That's a Motif library. You'll need to either purchase Motif I assume
or try out the free implementation called LessTif (may or may not
work).

Look for RPMs of LessTif, probably on your CDs, or head to the home site.
The latest binary RPMs are available from there.

The line in colors.c is probably
  #include <dbm.h>

Change it to
  #include <gdbm/dbm.h>

This tells it to look in /usr/include/gdbm for the header.
I believe that should work.

Do you have a boot disk?
If not, then you MIGHT be screwed.... I know cuz I've been there.
Uh, recently I know Mandrake has started sending out with their CDs a program
called Lnx4Win. So if you run Winderz you can install and run it from that
partition and then mount your real linux partitions and manually edit lilo.conf

Hi there,

I resently bouhgt my first laptop and what I was afraid off did
happen.... PCMCIA hangs up the system.

I use SUSE 6.3 on my Compaq Armada 1700 assoon as SuSE starts the SysV
pcmcia startup script my system locksup about 1.5 minutes later it
reboots. I tried this with all my cards in or out or only my
modem/network card the same thing happens

The strange thing however was, that during installation when I told the
SuSE install to use the PCMCIA modules it did load and it did find my
3Com MegaHertz adapter.

I know the free irq's in my system I set the PCIC_OPTS to only use those
even tried no IRQ-probe but the effect stays the same.
What am I doing wrong here since on install it did work?

I now have disabled booting the PCMCIA so at least I can work but
I would love to connect my laptop to a network :)

Raymond

Nope it is not unless in the /etc/lilo.conf a special password is given!

But nothing is lost yet, boot the installation disk/cdrom then go to a
virtual terminal with alt+f2 or f3 or f4 etc
then if your harddive isn't yet mounted mount it to the /mnt and make the
changes to get your system back up.

Hi, I'm playing with the program ps2pdf.
When I look at my files, they are in letter format (but the postscriptfiles I make the
pdfs is A4 format).
When I print the files from Acroread, they look ok, but on screen they are different.
If I looking on my files in gv, it's easy to switch papersize, and with A4 size, they
look ok.
But I can't find such an option in Acroread. Anybody who knows how to make Acroread
display A4 format?

Best regards
