'cuse me??
First of all what does this have to do with Linux? At least your example is
about X11 at best.

And second what's wrong with using the mouse buttons? Left button marks a
selection, right button extends the selection, middle button pasts the
selection.
Works everywhere and always.

Office is pretty darn powerful, not just because of its capabilities but
because of its installed base (external network effects). It does 98% of what
an average office user wants it to do, and its easy to share docs, etc.

And anyway, the best measure is sales. MS does not coerce businesses into
buying Office, they buy it because it's the best choice given their needs.
And I don't know about the Corel suite, but the Lotus suite *sucks* IMO.

Okay, quick question. I'm using Solaris 2.6 on our virtual server, but
I'm sure the same question applies to Linux as well which I use
personally, hence the cross-posting of the article.
We have a lot of customers who want to have their own virtual ftp
sites. Rather than being hosted on our main server under one of our
generic ftp directories, Joe at www.cheapdomain.com (whose domain we
host) wants to have the possibility of people ftp'ing to
ftp://ftp.cheapdomain.com/
We are using wu-ftp-2.4.2-beta-18 on both Solaris and Linux. I heard
there was a patch out there somewhere that would assist in setting this
up.
Thanks.

Subject: file system crashes
Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 22:49:46 GMT

Hi all,

<since I don't know whether my posting got through,I sent it again, I
hope, it is visible now...>

last night I experienced an enormous file system crash, not for the
first time so far. During one year with Linux, it has happened about 6
times now! With lots of files/directories/nonsense links in "lost and
found".

Perhaps, someone knows what might be the origin of the problem. My
system is a P150, 32 MB RAM, Suse 4.4.1, kernel 2.0.33, 25 MB swap.

I found these warnings in /var/log/warn:

Apr 2 03:04:14 my kernel: EXT2-fs error (device 03:08):
ext2_find_entry: bad
entry in directory #4317: rec_len %  != 0 - offset=0, inode=33188,
rec_len=6005, name_len=0
Apr 2 03:04:14 my sendmail[31561]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root): orderq:
cannot
open "/var/mqueue" as ".": No such file or directory
Apr 2 03:16:32 my syslogd: exiting on signal 15
Apr 2 03:26:51 my kernel: EXT2-fs error (device 03:08): ext2_readdir:
directory #43927 contains a hole at offset 12288
Apr 2 03:26:51 my kernel: EXT2-fs error (device 03:08): ext2_readdir:
directory #43927 contains a hole at offset 13312

I should note that I like Linux very much, but begin to despair about
it. I always shut down in a clean way, and I also use win95 just as
often, without ever having had such problems. Scandisk/surface
analysis, smart values under windows as well as e2fsck and badblocks
under linux don't show me any problems.
So what is going on here?

Before the crash, I had compiled and installed window maker, thus
creating and deleting many files/directories. I noticed that such
activities (creating huge numbers of files and deleting huge numbers
of files recursively) seem to result in such problems (also had it
with a news spool under leafnode which I deleted by a script).

I would also like to mention that I use some unstable software, such
as "wine", "ext2 compression", "dmsdos file system support", "umsdos
support", although I remember having had similar problems before using
those things.

Is it my hardware (hard drive)? (which seems to run fine under
windows)

Who can help me, who had similar problems and found their cause and
solutions?

Please, answer me; any helpful hints are welcome.
Thanks.

Heike Holzhauser

Subject: Xlogmaster 1.6.0 - tool to monitor system status and logfiles
Date: 31 Mar 1999 19:25:50 +0200

The Xlogmaster is a X11/GTK+ based program that allows easy and
powerful monitoring of your system. It allows reading logfiles,
status-giving devices (like the /proc devices) and running programs to
gather information about anything the user desires. This input may
then be translated by means of a user-defined plugin in order to be
more understandable for the user.

The output may then be processed with various filters that allow
anything from high-/lowlighting to starting a program that shuts down
your computer in case of a security breach.

It is a very useful tool for all programmers, system administrators,
control freaks or people who just like to know exactly what's going on
on their system.

_CHANGES_ :
* Complete "Customize" Menu rewrite
* Plugin support
* GTK+ 1.2.0 compliant
* The EXEC lines now allow pipes...
* Keyboard accelerators for entries (keys '1'-'0' without mods, with
CTRL, with ALT & with CTRL+ALT)
* Keyboard accelerators for menu
* the Xlogmaster now evaluates the following environment variables:
XLM_HOME - the directory where the main configuration resides
XLM_LIB - the directory where the Xlogmaster expects the sound
                        scripts subdirectories
XLM_DB - the directory where the database is located
XLM_USER_DB - location of the users private database
* support for a system wide entry database
* support for personal entry database
* the Xlogmaster now catches logfile rotation
* a new mode - the "RUN" mode that allows execution of any program to
gather information about the system and evaluate it's stdout and
  stderr.

_Features_ :
- System wide and private database allow for easy reconfiguration and
  better integration into distributions
- Filters to raise/lower/hide lines
- Filters to alert/notify/uniconify/execute on lines in logfiles (even
  background ones)
- Audio notification for alert/notify/uniconify
- TAIL mode (basically emulating a "tail -f file")
- CAT mode (basically emulating a "cat file" in reglar intervals)
- RUN mode (running a program and processing it's stdout)
- Plugin to translate / process output in any desired way
- scrolling back in the logs with a scrollbar (size of buffer
  adjustable by user)
- all defaults can be overridden by commandline
- completely menu driven, fully customizable
- style can be custom modified to perfectly blend in with your desktop
- powerful matching due to REGEX patterns

We have posted the source code on our WWW site at
http://www.affinity-systems.ab.ca/software/ for sd-grab-0.1.2. This uses
MySQL and should compile on any ANSI C complient system which can run MySQL
3.22.19a,

>From the README:
sd-grab, sd-view, and sd-search are programs used to archive and display
slashdot articles on a WWW page using MySQL for a backend.

The tables writting by sd-view and sd-search are narrow for a 1/2 column
display by default, so, like our WWW news page 1/2 is slashdot 1/2 is our
stuff.

LICENSE and RESTRICTIONS
sd-grab has been placed under the GPL, please see the file COPYING for
LICENSE restrictions.

This software is provided as is, and there is no warrenty. If you like the
software tell others, if you don't tell us! Please refer to the EULA.txt
file contained in the distribution. You can also find our EULA at
http://www.affinity-systems.ab.ca/software/products/EULA.txt

WHAT YOU NEED
You will need a C compiler, a web server, and MySQL devel and server/clients
installed. This uses MySQL version 3.22.19a so anything else may need mods.

You can find sd-grab at http://www.affinity-systems.ab.ca/software/

Please send bug reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Regards,
Jim

Might be lesstif. I've got ddd here compiled against Motif 2.0, nothing
like that shows or ever showed up with either the libc5 or now the libc6
versions.

Subject: Need a program to generate cross references

I think I remember an announcement awhile back a program or two that
claimed to generate crossreferences from C code. I need one of these
(for personal, non-profit) use. Ideally, it would generate working
hyper-links to other files in a directory tree, but I'd be just as
happy to get an xref that covers the entier directory tree.

Please forward any possible candidates (links and not the programs
themselves) and I will be most grateful.

Thanks,
Jim Jowski
