Actually the README in /usr/src/linux should explain all steps.
If you still have problems, please feel free to ask specific questions.

That has the effect of causing local versions to run rather than
the original distribution version. Shell scripts which depend upon
the quirks of original versions can be accessed by either setting
a specific PATH or by using the full path name.

Ho ho ho!
For all those who have been too busy over the festive season to keep up with
the little guy's exploits, looks like the major players are following Tux's
friendliness and opening up source code left right and centre
(http://www.kieser.net/linux.html) ... IBM, Netscape and now Sun too!
Talk about getting the pecking order right! Am I being over the top in
suggesting that Tux is busy peeing all over conventional business models?
Well, whatever your view, merry Xmas everyone, it has been a great year for
everyone working on OSS. What a great way to end the year, huh? All the best
to the entire movement in the New Year ... I think that this coming year may
very well see the OSS snowball change the computing development paradigm. For
the better.

Aladdin Ghostscript 5.10, originally released in November 1997, has now been
released with the GPL as GNU Ghostscript 5.10. It is available for
downloading from
ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/ghost/gnu/gs510/
and also
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu
and mirrors of that site (see list below).
Please DO NOT report problems with GNU Ghostscript 5.10 to Aladdin, unless
we accidentally did something really stupid like omit a crucial file. To
the best of our ability and subject to the constraint that there are only 24
hours in a day, problems in Ghostscript 5.10 have been fixed in Ghostscript
5.50, released in September 1998 with the Aladdin Free Public License and
scheduled for re-release in September 1999 with the GPL. If you have a
problem with GNU Ghostscript 5.10, we suggest you seek help on the
gnu.ghostscript.bug newsgroup.

Subject: Problems uncompressing kernel
Date: 29 Dec 1998 18:18:29 GMT
I'm trying (really trying) to get rid of Windoze on my home machine (a
Cyrix P166 w 64MB) but work means I can only get to do it during
breaks between teaching terms.
So, yesterday I upgraded fropm RH5.0 to RH5.1 (and yes, I know 5.2 is
out) only to find that a problem I'd been having sporadically every
time I booted linux now appears to be pretty consistent.
The problem is this: when I select linux from the LILO choices, I get
the loading linux...message then: invalid compressed format (errno=1)
system halted. occasionally the errno is 2 and also sometimes the
system simply freezes after the loading message.
I had thought this might be a problem with my 6 GB IDE disk, whose
first GB is given over to a DOS partition.
However, when I try booting from the floppy created during the
install/upgrade process the same thing happens - invalid compressed
format. Ditto if I try to use that disk as a rescue disk.
(Oh yes, rest of my system: ASUS P/I-P55TVP4 MB w. NCR SCSI
controller, noname S3 Virge video card w 4MB. IBM CDROM, ZIP drive and
Microtek scanner on the SCSI chain, SMC Elite Ultra ethernet card)
So: has anyone seen this at all? Any idea what causes it? Is there any
way of building an uncompressed kernel and sidestepping the problem?
To reiterate: if I *can* get Linux to boot then everything else
(including KDE, networking, Applix) works just fine.
I am *sooooooo* frustrated.

Actually most people do not use operating systems in order to "learn"
but to use them to accomplish other things. And most of what one
"learns" in setting up a system is pretty useless- it will change by
next year. So, I agree that Linux needs to be easier to set up ppp on.
Yes, there are tools but many of them are somewhat obscure for a novice
to find. Unfortunately, the ISPs do not help by all using slightly
different methods to set up PPP (login,PAP, CHAP,...)

The first poster is slightly confused. There is no hashing. A UUID
contains the MAC address, a timestamp, and a sequence number. There
is no practical chance of a collision.

This has little to do with Linux but is a UNIX VFAQ:
1: Never name a program "test". For some shells this is a build-in command.
Also usually there is /usr/bin/test as well. Both will conflict with your
own program "test"
2: Most likely the current working directory is not in your search path
because of security reasons (details see the UNIX FAQ).
Use "./test" to start the program. This will take care of the first issue,
too.

If it is a bus mouse you need to make sure that you configured your
kernel for a bus mouse. To see if it is already configured:
As root:
cd /usr/src/linux
ls -a
This will show you a list of all the files including so-called
"dotfiles". These begin with a period and are configuration files.
Unless you search with ls -a, these files are not visible.
Look for a file named ".config". This is the file that is created
when your kernel is put together. It will show all the choices you
made (or were made for you).
less .config
Look for a line that says:
CONFIG_MOUSE=y
and another line that says:
CONFIG_PSMOUSE=y
If you do not have these you will need to reconfigure your kernel.
PS/2 uses /dev/psaux
Take a look to see if your /dev/mouse is linked to /dev/psaux.
If it is not, do:
ln -s /dev/psaux /dev/mouse
This will create a symbolic link between the two.
>2. I cannot get XFree86 to work. Even XF86Setup hangs my system. Is
>there a simple configuration file that will (almost) always get the system in

>CDROM but I do not know how to find it without a reinstall)
There is a file named "Manifest" on your cdrom. It consists of a
directory of all the packages on the cd. On an old CD of mine it is:
Package: ./x7/x312bin.tgz
/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config
This should also be on your harddrive unless you wiped it on purpose.
In order to search for any file in your Linux partitions, first create
a data base by using the command:
updatedb
Your system will labor for a few minutes to create a database of all
files. You can then use the command:
locate <filename>
Example: locate startx
The full path to the file will be displayed.
>
>I have also another question: How do I find out what has been installed on
>my system and which commands I can use at all?
You can use the command "pkgtool" to review all the programs that have
been installed. Since this tool allows you to delete and add new
programs you may wish to play safe and just take a look at the
contents of /var/adm/packages.
All the files in /sbin /usr/sbin /usr/bin (and any other directory
with "bin" in the title are names of commands. You can use the manual
reader command followed by the name of the command to get a
description of their use:
man startx
This will tell you about the startx command.

A fruther bulletin. This morning I decided what the hell and did a
complete install, formatting all partitions (except the DOS one).
As soon as I attemtpted to reboot - same problems, whether from floppy
or hdd.
I then tried booting the install disk again (I can't recall why now)
and - it encountered the same problem!
In addition I've also seen crc error and incomplete literal tree
messages. obviously the uncompress of the kernel is failing. It makes
no difference whether I reset or cycle the power, I get the same
errors (three-finger saltue doesn't work, of course).
I'm suspecting some sort of hardware problem, maybe with the Cyrix
chip. Has anyone else seen anything like this, ever?

while this is no doubt excellent advice as far as IPX and AppleTalk go
(since the vast majority of people don't use them), the faq advice is
bad when you *really do need them* but can't figure out the crazy
naming scheme.
i had a request for net-pf-17 when i set up dhcpcd. turns out it is
af_packet or somesuch. but how to figure that out? kernel docs
sucked royally.
find /usr/linux -type f -print | xargs fgrep net-pf-17
gave *nothing*. where does the `net-pf-' string live? is it a
printf("net-pf-%d", npn) type thing? anyhow info on the various
modules is hard to find.
fortunately there is deja news which is how i solved this problem.

So because everything is going to change by next year....we should
just forget it....come on....If everyone did that, we'd never learn
anything. The changes that happen from year to year, are usually
built upon pre-existing foundations....so having knowledge of the
past, will help us learn in the future.

I thought that ntfs support is read only. I compiled the kernel
2.2.0 this afternoon and noticed that. What is the fstab command
to recognize my ntfs partition?

It is available in read only mode with the stable kernel 2.2.0
